Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. RECLAIMED PAINTINGS FROM THE COLLECTION OF JACQUES GOUDSTIKKER 2008 LARGE HC DJ. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940) a Jewish Dutch art dealer took over his father s gallery in 1919 and quickly made his presence felt-introducing a more international thrust to the gallery and demonstrating a keen business acumen Goudstikker became one of the most successful art dealers and tastemakers in Amsterdam between the wars.Tragically Goudstikker died in flight from the Nazis in 1940 and his enormous collection of art including approximately 1400 paintings was looted by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goring. In 2009 a portion of this looted art was restored to Goudstikker s heirs by the Dutch government. Featuring some two hundred color illustrations this book examines Goudstikker s legacy-reveals the dramatic story of the looting of his collection and discusses the legal efforts that finally brought its restitution. I am very pleased to offer then: Reclaimed-Paintings from the Collection of Jacques Goudstikker by Peter C. Sutton et al. This rather large hard cover book (9 ¾ x 12 ¼ inches 268 pages) was published by the Yale University Press in association with the Bruce Museum of Greenwich Connecticut and the Jewish Museum of New York dated 2008. It is the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name held at the Bruce Museum. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable story of which we have all heard something about; here you can best understand this tragedy. Condition: This book is in near fine condition virtually without signs of wear or blemish. The only mark I found in the book is the former owner s embossed logo on the front endpaper. There is some very faint edge wear to the spine tips of the dust jacket. It is not ex-library or a remainder.

Superb catalogue published to accompany the exhibition Before Time Today: Reinventing Tradition in Aurukun Aboriginal Art,held at University of Queensland Art Museum, 2010. Contents: Art and Aurukun cultural history / P. Sutton Tradition and change in Aurukun aesthetics / S. Butler Conversations with artists / S. Kalkeeyorta, M. Ngallametta, T. Albert The art of Wik politics and the politics of Wik art / D. Martin Aurukun art in the Netherlands: law poles reciprocating / G. Petitjean. 'This compelling book considers [cultural issues] within the context of unique, stunning art from the remote north Queensland Aboriginal community of Aurukun. It explains how Aurukun art production absorbed the colonial impact of mission and government intervention throughout the 20th century and provides the powerful visual symbols for the political struggles of the Wik people to regain land ownership and social justice. Extensive high-quality reproductions of Aurukun's charismatic carvings, weavings, and paintings illustrate the inspiring connections between art and life, and demonstrate how a reinvention of artistic tradition fuels creativity and innovation in keeping culture relevant and vibrant.'
