100 pp.; 197, [1] pp. Illus. with b/w engravings. 24mo (13 cm.). Hayley's poem was first published in England in 1771 and many engravers undertook to illustrate it including William Blake and Peter Maverick (1780-1831) -one of three printmaker sons of a printmaker- an engraver of bookplates, maps, bank notes and book and magazine illustrations, who took as an apprentice Asher B. Durand with whom he established a partnership between 1817 and 1820. He designed the plates for the Annals of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York using the then new process of lithography. OCLC lists only 11 copies. Bound with Sotheby's Constance de Castile (Boston: Published by West and Blake; Greenough and Stebbins, printers, 1812). Shaw & Shoemaker 26781. William Sotheby (1757-1833) was a patron of literature as well as translator and author whose friends included Byron, Coleridge, Scott, Wordsworth, and many others. OCLC lists only 13 copies. Shaw & Shoemaker 17727. Shaw & Shoemaker 26781. Spine heavily rubbed with loss at head; boards rubbed, occasional browning to endpapers, scattered light foxing throughout, front flyleaf torn with one half excised, minor creasing to two leaves, tiny tear to one leaf, but overall still tight and clean. A scarce copy of both works in these early bindings. Half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. …

hardcover. Zustand: Poor. First Edition. Publication: Hartford, Samuel G. Goodrich, 1820 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 177. Condition Report: Poor. The original publisher's paper-covered boards are heavily worn, darkened, and scuffed, with the paper covering the spine almost entirely perished, leaving the underlying binding structure fully exposed. The boards are severely edge-worn, featuring rounded and frayed corners. The binding remains intact and holds the text block together, though it is fragile and unsophisticated. Internally, the pages exhibit moderate to heavy foxing and age-toning throughout, with occasional spotting and staining that is particularly noticeable around the margins and the engraved plates. Despite these significant external flaws, the text remains entirely legible, and the volume notably retains its half-title, engraved title page, frontispiece, and four plates, preserving the core of this early American imprint. Catalogue Note: This is the first edition of the first volume (Volume I only) of Trumbull's poetical works, presented in its original, untrimmed publisher's boards. The volume is notably illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of the author, executed by Peter Maverick and A.B. Durand after a 1793 painting by John Trumbull, alongside an added engraved title page featuring an elaborate vignette, and four additional engraved plates. While complete two-volume sets of this 1820 Hartford edition appear periodically on the open market, early nineteenth-century American imprints surviving in their original, fragile paper boards are increasingly scarce. Most extant copies have been entirely rebound or heavily restored over the last two centuries, making this an authentic, albeit highly worn, survival of early American publishing practices. First published in 1820, this collection brings together the seminal verses of John Trumbull, a leading figure of the "Connecticut Wits". This first volume prominently features his celebrated mock-epic M'Fingal, a satirical masterpiece that vigorously lampooned British loyalists during the American Revolution. Blending sharp wit with classical epic conventions, Trumbull's verse captured the patriotic fervour of the era, securing his lasting place as a foundational voice in early American literature. Peter Maverick & A.B. Durand (illustrator).…

Hardcover. GARCIA CONDE, Diego (1760-1822) - CALVO, Rafael María - MAVERICK, Peter (1780-1831). Plano general de la Ciudad de Mexico. Levantado por el Teniente Coronel Don Diego Garcia Conde en el ano de 1793. Aumentado y corregido en lo mas notable por el Teniente Coronel retirado, Don Rafael Maria Calvo en el de 1830 Fine folding engraved map (20 x 22 inches) of Mexico City in 1793, with original hand-colour in full, the title upper left, and a table with key arranged by 'quarter' of the city showing the location of plazas, important buildings and landmarks, engraved by Peter Maverick, tipped into original scarlet morocco, gilt wallet Provenance: with the ink library stamp of the photographic studio of Manuel Gonsalez on the verso of the map; with the engraved bookplate of Frederick Starr (1858-1933), American academic and anthropologist, on the inside of the wallet First United States edition of this rare map of Mexico City, first surveyed for the map in 1793, and first published in much larger format in 1807, and then in London in 1811 in smaller format as here. Engraved by the New York engraver Peter Maverick, the son of the Colonial-era engraver of the same name. Rafael María Calvo, who corrected and augmented the map, was a retired officer of the Regiment of Infantry of the Spanish Royal Engineers. Built in the middle of lake Tenochtitlan, Mexico City had been prone to regular flooding until the late 18th-century that engineering works were truly successful in keeping the water at bay, after which the city grew rapidly. By the time of the survey for this map in the early 1790s, during the viceregal administration of Conde de Revillagigedo, the city had advanced towards the east and south and west, as the north was still bounded by water. To the west, it expanded to what is now Balderas Street. The populated area reached eastward to the lakeshore, which then was just beyond the now Circuito Interior and the La Merced Market. To the south began to appear houses in an area now called Colonia Doctores. To the west, following what is now Avenida Chapultepec towards the Ciudadela, now the National Library, near Metro Balderas. To the north past Tlatelolco and to the south to Topacioa and the now Calzada de la Viga. At the time of the survey Mexico City was still under Spanish rule and independence would not come until 1821, followed by the creation of the Mexican republic in 1824. When this edition of the map was published in 1830 Mexico was relatively stable, with the war with America still 15 years in the future. Carrera Stampa 256. Engraved certificate dated May 27th 1811, admitting James Jones as a fireman in New York City. With an engraving at the bottom of firemen in action, with the caption, "Engraved by Peter Maverick from a drawing by Archibald Robertson. The text reads, "These are to certify that James Jones is pursuant to law, nominated and appointed one of the Firemen of the City of New York, May 27th, 1811 By the Com. Council, J Morton, clerk."
