Woodcut and engraved vignettes coats of arms in the text, head and tail pieces, plus a number of 5,8, and 11 line initials. The Speed map of Cheshire is lacking, as usual. The contents are clean, crisp and fresh. Contemporary plain unsophisticated calf, rubbed and faded with double blind fillets round the perimeter, three corners lightly bumped with the boards peeping through, the spine with five raised bands ( bindng cords slightly exposed), later ink hand written paper label, joints cracked but sound. White endpapers, the front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Richard Clark Esq. ( 1739-1831) Chamberlain of London, a post he held for thirty-three years. Overall, a very good copy. Sir Robert Leycester(1614-1678), antiquary was born in Cheshire. Educated at Dasenose College, Oxford, and took the Royalist sied in the Civil War.' Historical Antiquities in two books . ' is renowned for its historical research and accuracy. However, the publication of the work led to a vitriolic controversy as the book questioned the legitamacy of Amicia , the wife of Ralph Mainwaring, one of Leycester's ancestors. The first part explores the history of Britain and Ireland, whereas the second part focuses on Cheshire, where the author was from. This is one of the earliest county histories of Cheshire.This work did cause a controversy for Leycester. In it he raises the question of the legitimacy of the wife of Ralph Mainwaring, Amicia, and whether or not she was the lawful daughter of Earl Hugh Cyveliok. Leycester's claim led to a dispute with her descendant, Sir Thomas Mainwaring of Peover, and resulted in a paper war of some seventeen pamphlets. The dispute ended after the Chester assizes declared in favour of Amicia's legitimacy.Leycester was an antiquarian and historian, who fought on the royalist side during the English Civil War, which led to him being made a baronet. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards, with renewed endpapers. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Spine is faded. A few small marks and light rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Lacking the folding map, as is usual. The occasional pencil annotation to the margins. Small chip to leaf B1, no loss of text. Neat repair to leaf F4. Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.

Whereunto is annexed a Transcript of Doomsday-book, so far as it concerneth Cheshire, taken out of the original record. Folded Map. The volume collates as follows (A)4, B4 3K4 The map from the 1631 Edition of Speede s Atlas of county Maps, with inscription: Performed by John Speede assisted by William Smyth, And are to be sold in Pope s head Alley against the exchange, by John Sudbury and George Humble. In our copy the map is still unchanged, the printer s control is now Ss, and on the back The Countie Palatine of Chester headline measures 4.1 ins. / 103 mm. in length, making this the 1631 reprint. "Some antiquities touching Cheshire" and "A transcript of Cheshire at large, out of the greater Doomsday-book" each have separate title page, dated 1672, on leaf M3r and 3E1r, respectively. With the bookplate of Arley Hall and (probably?) the bookplate of Rowland Egerton-Warburton, who rebuilt Arley Hall in the 19th Century. Bound in full period blind ruled calf, re-backed to style. With six compartments and five raised bands, with an 18th C lettering piece in the second compartment. (Saved from an earlier 18th C re-back.). The boards scuffed, corners renewed. The spine in a like new condition. Internally the leaves are well margined with occasional foxing and creases as well as some minor worming to the endpapers and a repaired small hole to the dedication leaf. The map without tears, bound in as issued. The map a fresh sharp early impression. The volume measures 33.5 x 22 x 4 cm. Each leaf measures 328 x 204 mm.
