The adopted historiographical perspective is that of an "internal" history focused on the content of grammatical description, supplemented by "external" data related to social and institutional history. This study is innovative in that it provides a cross-sectional examination of problems and concepts, articulated along three axes: the categories of description, the method, and the theoretical orientation of the grammars. The detailed analysis highlights the problematic status of traditional syntax: it suffers from a deep "bidirectionality", as it practices the alliance of an upward (categorical) approach and a downward (semantic-logical) approach.
