Despite his early death at the age of forty-six he achieved a body of work that is amongst the most original and important reappraisals of modernism in painting to be found anywhere. Unlike most St Ives modernists, Lanyon was born in St Ives, and this led to a distinct connectedness to the Cornish landscape. Beyond his later gliding paintings his work is rooted to this land.
