Pos was in de periode 1936-1955 een van Nederlands belangrijkste intellectuelen. Aanvankelijk was hij classicus en vooral taalfilosoof aan de gereformeerde Vrije Universiteit, later ontpopte hij zich als een zeer veelzijdige algemeen filosoof verbonden aan de gemeentelijke Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn cultuurhistorische betekenis is vooral gelegen in zijn maatschappelijke stellingname tegen nationaal-socialisme en al te gemakkelijk anti-communisme. In deze biografie van Pos , de eerste die gebaseerd is op archiefonderzoek, ligt het accent op de ontwikkeling van zijn denken, in het bijzonder als wijsgeer en humanist. Pos heeft slechts enkele boeken, maar een groot aantal artikelen gepubliseerd. Uiteraard is hij op sommige punten van mening veranderd. Daarnaast heeft hij zich verschillende keren in zijn leven genoodzaakt gezien andere accenten te leggen binnen de door hem ingenomen, altijd complexe, filosofische traditie. Zijn filosofishe ontwikkeling wordt gekenmerkt door de poging uiteenlopende filosofische stromingen als neokantianisme, fenomenologie en marxisme met elkaar te verenigen, èn door het streven verschillende probleemgebieden van de wijsbegeerte recht te doen: wetenschapsfilosofie, taalfilosofie, metafysica, sociale en politieke filosofie. Er zijn mensen die geconcludeerd hebben, dat de eenheid in het filosoferen van Pos ontbreekt. Derkx heeft de handschoen opgenomen en is opzoek gegaan naar de inhoudelijke eenheid van Pos' werk. De ontwikkelingen in zijn wijsgerig en humanistisch denken worden op heldere wijze uiteengezet aan de hand van een beperkt aantal thema's. In de biografie is tevens opgenomen een zo volledig mogelijke lijst van de publikaties van Pos.

Neuware - This book addresses the ethical and political questions flowing from the vastly increased possibilities to manipulate the genetic properties of organisms, including human beings. Due to the great complexity of the scientific fields involved, these questions are framed and answered mostly by scientific experts. But the new technological possibilities and social practices connected with genetic manipulation intrude into domains that for a long time have been the provenance of religious and secular worldviews and touch upon deep-seated convictions and emotions. Moreover they are strongly influenced by economic and political interests. As a consequence, questions of scientific truth and technical control are getting more and more mixed up with questions regarding values and interests.
