Persson was the first transliterator into English of the Tshwa (ciTshwa or Tswa / Xitswa) language, spoken in a region west of Inhambane in Mozambique into southern Zimbabwe. Tshwa is sometimes considered a dialect of Tsonga. "While learning the language after coming to the mission field, like most beginners I started collecting words for a working vocabulary. This was all the more necessary since there was nothing in print to which I could refer when in need of a word.
