In den WarenkorbBritish industrial designer (1895-1961); Chief Instructor, Design, Royal College of Art, 1925-35. The two carbons to Capey from Luckhurst, one page, 12mo; the other three letters, one page, quarto. All very good, though somewhat dusty and lightly creased, and with staple holes to the top left-hand corners. Throwing useful light on the state of post-war art education, the correspondence concerns a request to Luckhurst from 'one-time Fellow of the Society' Hollewell for 'information and advice in regard to my daughter's future training'. 'She is now nearly 17 years of age, is attending the local High School and shows exceptional aptitude in Art. [.] | I suppose that commercial art is the most suitable for lucrative employment, but I should be pleased to have your views on this.' Luckhurst writes to Capey that Hollewell's letter 'asks for advice which I always find it very difficult to give'. Capey suggests sending Hollewell the Royal College of Art prospectus, and informing him that 'Any art student, who is proposing to make a profession of art, should safeguard his or her future by obtaining a degree. The Royal College of Art is the main recognised Institution for this purpose. There are others such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee Colleges, but the degrees offered by them are not of much consequence. | Of the schools suggested by Mr. Hollewell, the Slade is essentially Painting. The Chelsea Art School and the Colleges at Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham are good of their kind, but I would suggest that for general purposes the London Central School of Arts and Crafts is second best to the Royal College of Art.' Luckhurst incorporates this information in his reply to Hollewell, and thanks Capey in his second letter to him.

Zustand: Very Good+. New York: Wemple & Company, 1900? Fold-out and free-standing chromolithographed triptych trade card with advertising on verso for both Floreston Cologne and Parker's hair balsams and tonics (14cm). Two outer panels show vases with flowers (pink peonies and blue forget-me-nots) while the middle panel features a pensive child wearing a heavy bonnet. Margins rubbed and corners gently bumped; Verso margins scuffed and joint printing lightly faded. A scarce and Very Good or better example of quackery ephemera. For the low price of a bottle of perfume or by sending in your six cents and address you too could own one of these "screens.".

In den WarenkorbFour rare perfume labels, colour printed 'à la poupée' with floral designs: Extrait de Rose et de Pois de senteur, Extrait de Jonquille, Extrait d'Oranges de Portugal, Extrait suave. The largest (Extrait de Rose includes a space below for a text or legend, uninked or cancelled in this example, but with traces of the engraved text visible. A charming and rare example of this colour printing technique in which each impression contains all the colours at once, with inks carefully applied to the plate with a cushion-headed tool (the 'poupée' or doll). The technique is immediately recognisable from the gentle gradations between the various colours of the resulting imprint. 4 different labels (3 are c. 35 × 55 mm, the other 58 × 70 mm). Colour printed 'à la poupée'. Plus two contemporary monochrome labels.

Erstausgabe
FIRST EDITION. 206 x 142 mm. (8 1/8 x 5 5/8"). xx, 266 pp. Very pretty publisher's royal blue cloth, stamped in gilt, upper cover with thick-rule frame, central panel with floral spray cornerpieces, central coat of arms designed by the author, smooth spine with gilt title banners and sprays of flowers, all edges gilt. With one chromolithograph, 11 full-page engravings, and 250 illustrations in the text. Front free endpaper with ink ownership signature dated 1865. Negligible wear to corners, spine ends pushed in (as almost always), but still quite a fine copy--clean, bright, and fresh inside and out. In an attractive and extremely well-preserved publisher's binding, this is an excellent copy of an extensive treatment of perfumes, including their history, uses around the world, materials, and modern production techniques. With the aid of copious illustrations, the author describes the use of scents in Egyptian mummification, Jewish rites, Greek and Roman cosmetics, Turkish baths, Hindu worship, and rituals of "uncivilized nations," and describes other cosmetics, hairstyles, and beauty practices across many cultures and time periods. He ends the volume with chapters on perfume manufacturing and the principal materials used in perfumery, noting that most materials grow best in warmer climates--particularly the south of France. He also describes adopting novel scents found in Australia, such as eucalyptus, which had hitherto only been used in paint. Eugène Rimmel (ca. 1820-87) was born to a French parfumier family, and, at a very young age, established his own premises in London in 1834. According to DNB, "In his laboratory Rimmel developed some of the earliest commercially manufactured beauty products," including "the first factory-made, non-toxic mascara." A talented businessman and promoter, he built a sizeable fortune by exporting his cosmetics and perfumes around the world. Rimmel cosmetics is still in operation today. Copies of this first edition are around, but they seem all to be in unpleasant condition.
