He studied Medicine at the University of Salamanca. He was deeply influenced by the professor Juan Martínez Guijarro, later Cardinal Silíceo. Siliceo had been a disciple in Paris of the natural philosophers Juan de Celaya and Juan Dullaert. Through them he studied the works of the physicists at Merton College in Oxford, who in the fourteenth century carried out important research on the movement of bodies, velocities and acceleration phenomena. The ideas of Oxford physicists will inspire the theoretical approach of Pereira s animal behaviour model. The physician lived and practiced medicine in Medina del Campo. His professional prestige caused him to be summoned to court to serve Charles of Austria, the controversial and ill-fated heir of Philip II. Antoniana Margarita (Medina del Campo, 1554) is his masterpiece. In 1558 he published the present book, which is a very rare specifically medical work, which illustrates a new theory on the origin of fever. Pereira probably died after 1558. A. First published in 1629, with a second volume in 1639, this important analysis of Spanish colonial law was written by a Spanish jurist who served as a judge of the high court at Lima. Married to the Creole daughter of the governor of Cuzco and resident in Peru for eighteen years, he acquired an unparalleled knowledge of the law and history of the Indies. According to Gongora, his treatise is the "most systematic juridical formulation of the problems of legitimisation of dominion in the seventeenth century [and] enjoyed an unrivalled prestige in the official and legal circles of the Indies for a century and a half." It went though several editions in Latin and Spanish. OCLC locates 9 copies of our 1777 Latin edition in North America, 3 in law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, UT-Austin). The epitomy itself (pp. 31-62) gives a summary of each of the 138 chapters. The eight preliminary pages contain an annotated dedicatory letter to King Philip IV and three poems, while the first thirty numbered pages contain the annotated dedicatory letters (one to King Philip IV and one to Gaspar de Guzman, Count of Olivares & Duke of Sanlucar) and an annotated version of the note to the reader from the Disputationum. The letters and note to the reader are printed in two columns, with the text itself on the left and extensive notes on the right.A very good copy, with only a tear in the border of one leaf, not affecting the text. An epitomy of an influential work on the law in the Spanish colonies in America, with additional notes.l Alden & Landis 639/113 (4 copies, incl. 1 incomplete); Medina, Bibliotheca Hispano-Americana II, 410; Palau 318979; Sabin 86532.

Buch Erstausgabe
Couverture rigide. - Ex typographia Francisco Martinez, Matriti (Madrid) 1629, petit in-folio (20x29,5cm), (6) 751pp. A very attractive frontispiece-title by Roberto Cordier showing an altar with allegories of Faith and Religion, the king of Spain with one foot on an Globe supported by Neptune. Small lacks to head and foot of joints. Trace of a yellow dampstain to right-hand corner of last twenty leaves. Letter to Phillip IV of Spain and introductory portions lacking, a total of 11 leaves. In 1618, Juan de Solórzano Pereira wrote the king a petition to make him part of a book project on the West Indies. King Philip IV was seduced by the general idea of legally asserting once and for all the legitimacy of the Spanish possessions in America and financed the first book on justice, but not the second on the forms of government, which appear (6) 751pp. (100).

Zustand: Como nuevo.
