A serio-comic Bombastic Operatic Interlude in One Act by James Robinson Planche, embellished with a fine engraving by Percy Cruikshank from a drawing taken in the theatre by Mr. R. Cruikshank Published in London by John Cumberland Circa 1830 J. R. Planché's Amoroso, King of Little Britain is a satirical burlesque and interlude that launched his successful career as a playwright. It was first performed in 1818 and, despite its simple beginnings, earned him critical acclaim and the encouragement to pursue writing professionally, during which he became famous for writing extravaganzas, fairylike musicals, and historically accurate costume designs. Disbound without covers, 5.5 inches tall approx., 19 pages, light marking, and mild creasing wear else in good condition. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. 2nd Edition. Edward Bawden's copy, given to him by fellow artist Percy Horton and his wife Lydia CRUIKSHANK, George. George Cruikshank's Illustrations of Humphrey Clinker, Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Tom Jones, Joseph Andrews, Amelia, Vicar of Wakefield, and Sir Lancelot Greaves. London: Charles Tilt, 1836. Octavo, 175 x 110 mm. 82 pp. With 40 of the 41 engraved plates by George Cruikshank, lacking the first plate, "Humphrey's Introduction". Bound in full brown morocco by H. Sotheran & Co., London, with five raised bands and gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers. Binding worn, particularly at the joints and corners; both joints cracked and the boards tender but still attached. Internally clean. A good copy overall. Edward Bawden's copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Edward Bawden from Lydia and Percy Horton." A presentation copy linking two figures from the generation of British artists associated with the Royal College of Art. Percy Horton (1897-1970) studied at the RCA from 1922, alongside Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and Henry Moore, and later returned as a member of the teaching staff from 1930 to 1949. He subsequently became Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University, remaining in the post until 1964. His work is represented in a number of major public collections including Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Imperial War Museum. Horton had also been an absolutist conscientious objector during the First World War. His refusal of military service led to court martial and imprisonment with hard labour, and his health deteriorated seriously before his release in 1917. Lydia Sargent Smith, whom he married in 1921, had been among those who campaigned on his behalf. The illustrations themselves had first appeared in 1832 as Illustrations of Smollett, Fielding, and Goldsmith, a suite of 41 plates drawn from Cruikshank's work for Roscoe's Novelist's Library. This 1836 edition retains the suite under a recast title listing the individual works illustrated. Signed by Author(s).…

In den Warenkorb9 uncoloured plates; a little toned & spotted with a few small tears to margins not affecting image. Orig. green pictorial printed paper wrappers; a little dusted & chipped but a good copy of a rare work. Copac records copies at the BL, Oxford and the V&A; OCLC adds three U.S. copies and two in Australia. This edition was preceded by an 1848 printing published by J. Harwood (recorded at the BL only in UK). A diverting graphic extravaganza, conceived in the Munchausen style, in which some of the peculiar features of an unsettled country are whimsically sketched. Mr. John Smith, the emigrant, and founder of the future flourishing town of Smith-Ville, who leaves England with fond anticipation of the snug enjoyments of untaxed colonial existence, is quite astounded at the rugged prospect of his new location and the violent changes of scene that there succeed each other with pantomimic rapidity. He is utterly bewildered at the unceremonious acquaintances and startling events that await him on his arrival, which continue to exhibit their power of attraction from time to time. Wild beasts and wilder fowl indulge him with discordant serenades, and only "hold their jaw" to steal his supplies; fierce tornadoes, vast diluvian washes, intrusive calls of natives when he is not "at home," continually get him into trouble. But in the end John Smith's pluck pulls him safely through all these obstacles. The difficulties and annoyances that stare him ruthlessly in the face, he soon finds are only to be overcome by energy and perseverance, and these latent virtues being called forth, their exercise rewards him by converting his new home, at first so cheerless and unpromising, into his once imagined El Dorado' (Bentley's Miscellany, vol. XXV, 1849, p. 562, and reprinted as part of the introduction in present work). The designer-cum-illustrator Percy Cruikshank was the son of the illustrator George Cruikshank. It has been suggested that the work is set in Canada, however, the presence of monkeys and alligators in more than one plate suggests a more southerly latitude.…
