Soft cover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. 119 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 25 cm. Introduction : One of the most significant technological advances in the history of ceramic production was the invention of underglaze painting. Painting directly onto the clay and sealing with a fired glaze facilitated the production of perm…anently decorated ceramics, using strong mineral pigments such as iron and cobalt. In China, this technique was introduced in the 3rd century AD on celadons from Zhejiang province. These early underglaze painted wares featured either seemingly random dots of iron or figurative designs in a calligraphic style reminiscent of the Han dynasty. This decorative technique was not extensively used until the Tang dynasty, however, where it appears frequently on Changsha wares from Hunan province.3 The pigments used here included iron but the great achievement of the Changsha kilns was to introduce copper as an underglaze pigment. Not only was copper itself used at Changsha but two colours of copper decoration were produced: oxidised green and reduced red, sometimes on the same piece. Cobalt was also used as an underglaze pigment for the first time in the Tang dynasty. Significantly, at this time it was used on porcelain wares, unlike the ceramics of Changsha and Zhejiang which were stonewares. The Tang porcelains with underglaze cobalt blue decoration were first discovered in 1975 in Yangzhou where sherds with geometric and figurative designs were found in the Tang ruins of Yangzhou city. These porcelains were made at the Gongxian kilns in Henan province and some have recently been found on a late Tang dynasty shipwreck.5 Very little underglaze decoration was produced in the succeeding Song dynasty but a variation of this technique was used extensively at kilns manufacturing Cizhou stonewares. On these wares, one frequently sees black slip decoration which is painted on to a white slip ground and covered with a colourless glaze. These designs were almost always figurative and this style of decoration continued into the Yuan dynasty, when underglaze painting was widely used for the first time in China. It was also at this time that underglaze decoration was introduced at Jingdezhen, the porcelain kilns in Jiangxi province which would manufacture imperial porcelains for nearly 700 years. The earliest porcelains made at Jingdezhen were plain white vessels with a bluish glaze and often incised or carved decoration in the Five Dynasties and Song periods. In the Yuan dynasty, these so-called qingbai wares were embellished with both underglaze cobalt blue and copper red decoration, usually appearing on small pieces destined for markets in South-East Asia. Jingdezhen also produced porcelains for other export markets at this time including the Near East where porcelains with underglaze blue decoration were acquired in vast quantities.
