Armand-Pierre Caussin de Perceval ( 1759-1835), French orientalist, was professor of Arabic in the College de France. In 1814 he went to Constantinople as a student interpreter, and afterwards travelled to Syria and Lebanon, spending a year in Lebanon, and finally becoming dragoman at Aleppo. He published several works covering the Arabic language and traditions. His great reputation rests almost entirely in this work, in which the native traditions as to the early history of the Arabs, down to the death of the Prophet and the complete subjection of all the tribes to Islam, are brought together with wonderful industry and set forth with much learning and lucidity. One of the principal manuscript sources used by Caussin de Perceval in this work is the (Book of Songs) of Abu Faraj, which was later published in 20 volumes in Boulaq (1868) in Egypt; but no publication of texts can deprive the Essai, which is now very rare, of its value as a trustworthy guide through a tangled mass tradition. In these three volumes the author traced the history of the Arabian tribes and States, from the earliest glimmerings of Islamic tradition, to the period when the whole area was united under the banner of Islam. Through the multitudinous and often discrepant genealogies, and accounts of individuals and of tribes, he has collated the several steps of various lines, noting at what point they meet, and where the tradition of events disproves or corroborates the tradition of names. The result of his investigations is exhibited with great ingenuity and clearness, in fifteen tables or genealogical trees, in which the descent of the chief tribes and most famous personages or the Peninsula is traced up, with the approximate era of each generation, to the most remote period for which tradition furnishes authority. #19303.…

First edition, edited by Caussin de Percival, with his pencil signature under the preface. One of the first complete French-Arabic dictionaries. Ellious Bocthor (1784-1821) was one of the many professional interpreters hired from the local populations of North Africa by the Armée d'Orient during Napoleon's invasion of Ottoman Egypt and Syria. Coptic by birth, Bocthor later travelled to Europe in the aftermath of the French defeat and withdrawal. After a period spent as an interpreter at the General War Depot under the protection of the duc de Feltre, in January 1821 he was appointed professor of Vulgar Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales in Paris; it was during this time that he compiled his dictionary. Written during the 19th century surge in Arab interest in the modern hard sciences, Bocthor's dictionary reflects many of the new technical terms flooding into Arabic to meet the needs of new technologies and new lifestyles. - Binding professionally retouched; light foxing, otherwise very good. - From the collection of B. Ellious Bocthor was an Egyptian Copt who left Egypt with the French army at the end of the Napoleon Bonaparte expedition (1798-1801) and became professor of Vulgar Arabic at the Royal Library in Paris. Bocthor died in 1821 at the young age of thirty-seven before the dictionary was finalised. It was completed by Caussin de Perceval, Bocthor's successor at the School of Modern Oriental Languages. Cf.
