Peter Pendrey (illustrator). Very good condition overall. Original Folio Society cloth binding is clean and firm, with light, even age toning and a few small spots of discoloration typical of mid-century cloth. The decorative black band and spine titling remain sharp and well defined. Corners are lightly rubbed, spine ends gently softened, but the binding is tight and square. Internally, the paper is clean and unmarked, with uniform age toning and no loose pages. No dust jacket, as issued for this Folio Society edition. Translated by Alec Brown and illustrated throughout with striking wood-cut illustrations by Peter Pendrey. A finely produced mid-century Folio Society volume, printed and bound in Great Britain, presenting one of Gorki's major novels in an elegant illustrated format. A handsome and collectible example from the Folio Society's classic period, well suited to collectors of illustrated books, Russian literature in translation, or Folio Society editions.

Hardcover book. Published by New American library not clear what year. Very collectible. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> More than a century ago, a young Easterner namedFrancis Parkman set out to explore life in the uncivilizedWest. With his friend and companion Quincy Adams Shaw,he traveled up the Oregon Trail to the camps of thePawnee and the Sioux. This book is the fascinating journalof that hazardous experience. It is an authentic record oflife on the trail, an eyewitness account of the Mormonsand outlaws, trappers and Indians, pioneers and adven-turers who tried to conquer the frontier back in the dayswhen America was young. Historian Henry Steele Com-mager wrote: ?The Oregon Trail appeared in 1849, andwith its publication Parkman was launched upon hiscareer as a storyteller without peer in American letters. It is the picturesqueness, the racy vigor, the poeticeloquence, the youthful excitement, that give The OregonTrail its enduring appeal, recreating for us, as perhapsdoes no other book in our literature,

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. First edition (only printing that we know of). Cloth spine and boards, oblong format. Good copy, lower edge of boards and lower corners worn, top right tip of front board with small chip in the facing. Design of boards identical front and back. Aside from an illustrated title page and a copyright page, the pages of the story and endpapers as well are extremely colorfully printed edge to edge and text is worked in in the illustrations. A greedy magician attempts to create gold using a captured gold beetle, among other things, but of course it all goes wrong. Astonishing quality for a wartime book. As there apparently was no place for a price to be printed, there is a small ink stamp "7/6 nett" on a blank page facing the title page. Pendrey illustrated a number of books for the Folio Society; this appears to be his only solo work.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Fine. Peter Pendrey (illustrator). A smart translation of this Icelandic Saga, with illustrations throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous in-text woodcuts. Laxdaela saga or The Saga of the People of Laxardalur, is one of the sagas of Icelanders. Written in the thirteenth century AD, it tells of people in the Breiðafjörður area in western Iceland from the late nineth to the early eleventh century. The saga particularly focuses on a love triangle between Kjartan and Bolli, who grow up together as close friends, and love they both have for the beautiful Guðrún which causes enmity between them. Translated with an introduction from Magnus Magnusson, an Icelandic-born British-based journalist, translator, writer and television presenter, and Hermann Palsson, an Icelandic language scholar and translator. Illustrated by Peter Pendrey, a British illustrator noted for his woodcuts. In the original quarter morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, excellent. Original paper covered slip case is also excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine. book.
