Pierce sailed before the mast, eventually becoming a trader all around the Pacific, with property in Hawaii particularly. Eventually he was made a diplomat, representing the U.S.A. to the Hawaiian Islands. Afterwards he was made the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the King of Hawaii.
