First published in 1876, this fanciful eight-canto poem describes the sea voyage of a bellman, boots, bonnet maker, barrister, broker, billiard marker, banker, beaver, baker, and butcher on a search for the elusive snark. Here the epic is illustrated by Mervyn Peake, who is said to have been paid only £ 5 for his work. First edition, presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs Robinson, with love from Christina Hole". One of Britain's leading folklorists, Christina Hole (1896-1985) was for many years editor of Folklore. Witchcraft in England has been described as "the first concise survey on the subject" (Dimond, p. 94). Her book is much enhanced by Peake's darkly captivating illustrations (he mischievously nicknamed his collaborator "Christ-in-a-hole"). "It was, perhaps, appropriate that such a book should be worked upon in an area [the Lake District] where witchcraft had been so prevalent. Mervyn would walk for miles drawing inspiration for the illustrations from the feel of the Lake District hills" (Watney, p. 112).
