Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: The city of Lucknow has always been steeped in history and continues to enjoy the tag of being a heritage city. However, with its tragic history of wars, massacres, mass executions and hurriedly buried dead bodies, (often without proper rites or graves), during 1857, it… is not surprising that there should be several accounts of supernatural hauntings. This book is a collection of 12 short stories and one novella, based on 13 Lucknow-based ghostly occurrences. It is a work of "historical fiction" - the historical part being meticulously researched and presented, after thorough checks and counter-checks for the sake of accuracy, and then the narrative part, which has its origins from urban legends and local folklore. However, all ghostly phenomena need not be confined to sites of bloody warfare. Ghostly activity can also occur in a modern day apartment complex. It is another matter that the apartment might have been illegally built by some unscrupulous developer over a former, disused graveyard. About the Author: PC Sarkar, former Principal Scientist, ICAR, Govt. of India, holds a Ph.D in organic chemistry. He is an alumnus of St Francis' College, Lucknow, Lucknow Christian College and University of Lucknow. In addition to a specialized book on chemistry and about a hundred research publications in national and international journals pertaining to his scientific profession, Dr Sarkar has to his credit, a series of articles on Lucknow, which appeared in the Heritage Page of the Lucknow Tribune during 2013-14. He is active in several fora related to the conservation of tangible / intangible heritage, particularly related to Lucknow. An avid traveler, he has criss-crossed India, and also visited several foreign countries in a bid to fulfill his passion. This is Dr Sarkar's sixth book based on the Forgotten heritage of Lucknow. The Title 'The Supernatural: Haunting Tales of Lucknow written/authored/edited by Dr. PC Sarkar', published in the year 2025. The ISBN 9789357229272 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 150 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Kalpaz Publications. This Book is in English. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: An extensive amount of documentation (including the author's own published contributions) exists on Nawabi Lucknow that describes, analyzes and offers in-depth insights into the art, culture and life-styles of that remarkable period spanning 130 years (1722 - 1856). In…contrast, there is a significant lack of awareness about Colonial Lucknow, which formally lasted for 92 years. This is surprising, given the considerable impact the British had on the development of the city, encompassing landscaping, the establishment of public facilities, the creation of institutions, and the construction of notable architectural landmarks, many of which are extant today. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise or historical account of those tumultuous times; instead, it is a modest endeavour to chronicle certain overlooked challenges, experiences, and successes of Colonial Lucknow from 1856 to 1947, aiming to present this information to readers in an interesting and succinct manner. Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. ABOUT THE BOOK Wajid Ali Shah, the last King of Awadh, who was accused of misgovernance and deposed by the British in 1856, remained an enigma all through his life time. In addition to soulful writings and innovative dance / musical compositions, his unique contribution to the cultural… landscape of Lucknow was the establishment of a finishing school for women, for training them in music and dance. This was called Parikhana, accounts of which were described in his book, Ishqnama, one of his earliest semi-biographical books. The present volume attempts to analyse in an unbiased manner, the king's motives and intentions in establishing Parikhana, taking into account the moral and cultural ethos prevalent in those times. The author also seeks to dispel the viewpoint that numerous mut'ah wives and their induction in Parikhana was part of any ulterior motive of the young king. Instead, it was merely a reflection on his profound love for the performing arts, and his firm belief on the restorative effect of music on himself, as well as on others. ABOUT THE AUTHOR PC Sarkar, Principal Scientist with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India, holds a Ph.D in organic chemistry. He studied in St Francis' College, Lucknow and Lucknow Christian College, followed by Lucknow University. In addition to a specialized book on chemistry and several research publications in national and international journals pertaining to his scientific profession, Dr Sarkar has to his credit, more than 50 articles on Lucknow, which appeared in the Heritage Page of the Lucknow Tribune during 2013-14. Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. ABOUT THE BOOK:- Any discourse on the lost (or fast losing) heritage of a city, praising or glorifying its past and describing it intellectually as well as emotionally, becomes a soulful task; one invariably experiences sorrow for the days gone by. Lucknow - Ode To A City, is not a his…tory book; it is more of a tribute to the lost heritage of Lucknow, it's palaces, gardens and architectural marvels which no longer exist. It's about people (other than the famed Nawabs and their Begums) across a wide spectrum of society, who had contributed to the uniqueness of Nawabi and colonial Lucknow. The book is not written in a lyrical style with stanzas; and yet, the sentiments expressed are similar to a formal ode: an exaltation of feeling and style, varying length of line, and complexity of form. It chronicles the writer's thoughts and feelings about a city, through deeply researched details, brought painstakingly together in concise form, for the general reader, as well as the heritage enthusiast. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- PC Sarkar holds a Ph.D in organic chemistry and is presently working as a Principal Scientist with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India. He did his schooling from St Francis' College, Lucknow, followed by college education from Lucknow Christian College and Lucknow University. He retained his passion for the Nawabi and colonial heritage of Lucknow, even though the call for a livelihood took him far from his beloved city at a relatively young age. In addition to a specialized book on chemistry and several research publications in national and international journals pertaining to his profession, Dr Sarkar has to his credit, more than 50 articles on Lucknow, which appeared in the Heritage Page of the Lucknow Tribune during the years: 2013-14. His first book, Lucknow: Buildings, Begums and The British, published in 2015, continues to be widely popular, for detailing hitherto unknown aspects of Lucknow, generally not discussed or written about. CONTENTS:- Foreword. 9 Acknowledgements . 13 Introduction . 15 Lost Marvels .21 Chapter - 1 Dara Shikoh Mahal (Shahjahanabad) . 23 Chapter - 2 Jalalabad Fort . 29 Chapter - 3 Macchi Bhavan . 35 Pleasure Gardens and Imposing Gateways.47 Chapter - 4 Pleasure Gardens . 49 Chapter - 5 Imposing Gateways . 69 Architecture of Lucknow.85 Chapter - 6 Euro-Islamic Fantasies . 87 Chapter - 7 Historiographic Battles (and Indo-Saracenic Styles) . 103 Of Men and Menageries . 117 Chapter - 8 Animal Farm . 119 Dramatis Personae .137 Chapter - 9 Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor . 139 Annexures .165 Annexure I. Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: Lucknow: Buildings, Begums and The British is not about history; rather it is a book on heritage - defined as the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes inherited from past generations. As a city, Lucknow has witnessed many upheavals during the last thre…e centuries; from being the seat of Nawabi pomp and show to the imperiousness of Colonial rule. From being described as the "Constantinople of the East" to being decimated, demolished and "fairly improved off the face of this earth." Instead of focussing on the well-known monuments of Lucknow, few errant rulers and the 1857 Siege, the author has focussed on lesser-known aspects of the city, embellishing the text with interesting trivia and tit-bits of information, accompanied by rare vintage images in an attempt to present a holistic picture of the city's turbulent past. Front Jacket Illustration: Nasir-ud-Din Haider, second King of Awadh with British Resident Col. John Low and Asst. Resident, Capt. James Paton, after a lost oil painting, possibly by Alexandre Benoit Jean Dufay de Casanova (17701844). Rear Jacket Illustration: Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, first King of Awadh at a banquet with British Resident Mordaunt Ricketts (green jacket) and his wife Charlotte, with other court officials; gouache and gold on paper, unidentified artist, circa 1840.
