Hebzucht, begeerte, leed en toewijding hebben allemaal een rol gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de tulp van een wilde bloem van de Aziatische steppen tot het over de hele wereld verbreide fenomeen van vandaag de dag. Alleen al de Verenigde Staten importeren elk jaar drie miljard tulpenbollen, Frankrijk en Duitsland zelfs nog meer. Waarom beheerste de tulp zoveel eeuwen in zoveel landen zoveel levens? De schrijfster, een onverholen tulpofiel, heeft zes jaar naar antwoorden op die vraag gezocht. Geen enkele andere bloem heeft ooit zo'n grote rol gespeeld. Pavord brengt politieke omwentelingen in kaart, werpt licht op sociale gedragingen, en verhaalt van economische bloeiperioden en crises. Dwalend door Azië, India, Rusland en het Ottomaanse Rijk vertelt ze hoe de tulp vanuit Turkije hiernaartoe kwam en heel West-Europa stormenderhand veroverde. Zelfs Jan Huysum, de grootmeester van de Hollandse bloemschilderkunst, kon zelden meer dan 5000 gulden voor een schilderij vragen, terwijl op een Alkmaarse veiling in 1637 een enkele bol van de tulp 'Admirael Liefkens' voor 4400 gulden van eigenaar wisselde. De tulp is rijk geïllustreerd, onder meer met werk van Huysum, Bosschaert, Brueghel. Het boek bevat tevens beschrijvingen van tachtig wilde tulpensoorten en honderden tuinvariëteiten. Dit prachtig uitgevoerde en onweerstaanbare boek is voorbestemd een bijbel te worden, een universeel geschenk en een bezit waarin de eigenaar zich voor altijd zal verheugen. Anna Pavord is tuinjournaliste van The Independent en schrijfster van alom geprezen tumboeken als The Flowering Year en Gardening Companion. Ze schreef twintig jaar lang artikelen voor The Observeren vele bijdragen aan Country Life, Country Living en Elle Decoration. Daarnaast is ze eindredacteur van Gardens Illustrated.
