Zijn Fysiologie van de spijsvertering verkent de werking van de maag- en pancreassecretie. Pavlov brengt in de maagwand van zijn proefdieren een fistel aan, die de hoeveelheid afgescheiden maagsap kwantificeert, en voert zijn zo zijn zogenoemde 'schijnvoederings-experimenten' uit. Hij toont aan de 'mechanische' stimuli, zoals zandkorrels of een een in de de maag opgeblazen rubberballon, de maagsap secretie niet of nauwelijks initiëren. In een van de experimenten, waarvan Pavlov in zijn vijfde college verslag doet, blijkt dat heel andere stimulie, zoals het horen van de voetstappen van de verzorger, de maagsapsecretie bij de honden al in gang zetten. Met deze ontdekking, het principe van geconditioneerde reflex, verwierf Pavlov wereldfaam. Voor zijn studie Fysiologie van de spijsvertering, die in 1898 werd gepubliceerd, ontving hij i 1904, vierenvijftig jaar oud, de Nobelprijs. 777g.…
