She begins: 'Dearest Sylvia - | I meant to write to you last month because I am one of those tiresome people who remember anniversaries & it was in August that you both came down to the Windermere to see us. But in August Frederick had a severe heart-attack - the worst he has had - and anniversaries & everthing else were forgotten.' She describes the circumstances and the'immediate result', as well as the changes which have had to be made as a result of his illness. Among the couple's occasional visitors has been 'I. A. Richards of Basic English'. She speculates on the effect of writing 'Canadian books' on his health. She turns to lighter matters, including newspaper and magazine formats, and the books with which she emerges from the eaves of their house. 'I hope the result of this torrent of words will be a long chatter letter from you telling us about yourselves & others. We still miss Walpole [the novelist Hugh Walpole, who had died in 1941] - how much more must he be misseed by those who saw him often.'.…

Frederick began her acting career on the stage, and made her film debut in her 30s, as Donna Roma in "The Eternal City" (1915). Although she was able to make a successful transition to the sound era, her career was cut short due to complications from abdomen surgery in 1936, and two years later, she suffered a fatal asthma attack, leading to her death at the age of 55. She is perhaps best remembered today for her appearance in the 1924 film "Three Women." 10 x 8 inches. Very Good, with creasing and a few small chips to the edges.…

Two vintage borderless photographs of actress Pauline Frederick from two of her earliest starring roles, "Bella Donna" (1915) and "The Spider" (1916), both of which are now considered lost. Already an established star of the stage, Frederick was in her thirties when she made her film debut, and her commanding presence and dramatic looks contrasted with the ingenues typical of the era, and was later compared to Joan Crawford, who was a great admirer of hers. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Frederick's nearly 70 acting credits in both silent and sound films are now lost. "Bella Donna" photograph: 8.5 x 8 inches. Double weight. Very Good.
