Wir analysierten die aus dem All beobachteten Vegetationsänderungen sowie Klimadaten aus dem Zeitraum 1982-2002. Eine deutliche Zunahme der Biomasse wurde auf 27,6% des Gebietes von SSA und eine Abnahme auf ca. 2,5% beobachtet. Globale Veränderungen in der atmosphärischen Chemie sind möglicherweise für die Zunahme der Produktivität der Vegetation verantwortlich, und dieser Prozess überlagert anthropogene Landdegradationsprozesse wie Landumwandlung, Überweidung und Bodendegradation. Eine erneute Analyse der Dynamik der Vegetationsproduktivität unter Berücksichtigung der atmosphärischen Düngung deutet darauf hin, dass eine 10-mal größere Fläche als die der tatsächlichen Produktivitätsabnahme durch Landdegradationsprozesse durch die atmosphärische Düngung überlagert ist.
