Aus dem Englischen ("Paul Outerbridge Jr: Photographs", 1989) übertragen von Karin Stempel. Künstlerporträt: Paul Outerbridge, Jr. (geboren am 15. August 1896 gestorben am 17. Oktober 1958) war ein amerikanischer Fotograf, der für seinen frühen Einsatz und seine Experimente in der Farbfotografie bekannt war. Outerbridge war ein Mode- und Werbefotograf, ein früher Pionier und Lehrer der Farbfotografie und ein Schöpfer erotischer Aktfotografien, die zu seinen Lebzeiten nicht ausgestellt werden konnten. Noch als Teenager arbeitete Outerbridge als Illustrator und Theaterdesigner und schuf Bühnenbilder und Beleuchtungskonzepte. Nach einem Unfall, der seine Entlassung aus dem Royal Canadian Naval Air Service im Jahr 1917 verursachte, trat er in die US-Armee ein, wo er seine erste fotografische Arbeit produzierte. 1921 schrieb sich Outerbridge an der Clarence H. White School of Photography an der Columbia University ein. Innerhalb eines Jahres wurden seine Arbeiten in den Zeitschriften Vanity Fair und Vogue veröffentlicht. 1925 lud die Royal Photographic Society in London Outerbridge ein, in einer Einzelausstellung auszustellen. Outerbridge reiste daraufhin nach Paris und freundete sich mit den Künstlern und Fotografen Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp und Berenice Abbott an. In Paris erstellte er ein Layout für das französische Magazin Vogue, lernte Edward Steichen kennen und arbeitete mit ihm zusammen und baute das größte und am besten ausgestattete Studio für Werbefotografie seiner Zeit. 1929 wurden 12 von Outerbridges Fotografien in die renommierte deutsche Film- und Fotoausstellung aufgenommen. Als er 1929 nach New York zurückkehrte, eröffnete Outerbridge ein Studio, in dem kommerzielle und künstlerische Arbeiten produziert wurden, und begann, eine monatliche Kolumne über Farbfotografie für das U.S. Camera Magazine zu schreiben. Outerbridge wurde bekannt für die hohe Qualität seiner Farbillustrationen, die in einem äußerst komplexen Dreifarben-Carbro-Verfahren hergestellt wurden. 1937 wurden Outerbridges Fotografien in eine Ausstellung im Museum of Modern Art aufgenommen und 1940 veröffentlichte er sein bahnbrechendes Buch Photographing in Color, in dem er hochwertige Illustrationen verwendete, um seine Techniken zu erklären. Outerbridges Aktstudien in lebendigen Farben enthielten frühe Fetischfotos und waren nach zeitgenössischen Maßstäben zu unanständig, um von der breiten Öffentlichkeit akzeptiert zu werden.[3] Ein Skandal um seine erotische Fotografie führte dazu, dass Outerbridge sich als Werbefotograf zurückzog und 1943 nach Hollywood zog. Trotz der Kontroverse schrieb Outerbridge weiterhin Fotogeschichten für Zeitschriften und schrieb seine monatliche Kolumne. 1945 heiratete er die Modedesignerin Lois Weir und arbeitete in ihrer gemeinsamen Modefirma Lois-Paul Originals. Er starb 1958 an Lungenkrebs. Ein Jahr nach seinem Tod veranstaltete die Smithsonian Institution eine Einzelausstellung von Outerbridges Fotografien.
