Zustand: Sehr gut. 160 Seiten, 79 Abb. Sehr gutes Exemplar. / Very good copy. - Almost every work by Martin Boyce from the past five years may be traced back to the discovery of a black-and-white photograph of four, five-meter high concrete trees created by the sculptors Joël and Jan Martel to be set in a garden designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Instantly captivated by the image of these monumental, neo-cubist curiosities, which briefly bloomed during the Expo's run before disappearing from view, Boyce nevertheless set it aside for a time before figuring out how best to respond to this alluring but fugitive precedent. That he would eventually do so was almost inevitable given that his work, since its beginnings in the mid-1990s, has consistently involved the downbeat sculptural détournement of a succession of icons of high modernist design. Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand are among the mid-century masters whose classic pieces of furniture have been subjected to Boyce's less than reverent attentions, modulating in tenor between the abrasive and the melancholic, as the twentieth century shaded into the twenty-first. "Having established himself as one of the most respected fashion photographers in the UK during the 1990s, Nigel Shafran`s more recent work has been widely exhibited, including shows at The Photographer`s Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Fig-1. Shafran`s work is characterised by the quiet observation of everyday life. His chosen subject matter is deliberately low-key and often domestic in nature: the washing up, his Dad`s office, charity shops, car boot sales. And yet, his work extracts from this something profound and consistently beautiful, the sense of a natural order in ordinary things, or, as Shafran says `an acceptance of how things are` Shafran`s monograph surveys his work, including series such as Ruthbook, Washing Up 2000, Dad`s Office and Ruth On The Phone. The book also includes his most recent domestic interiors as well as a selection of his favourite snapshots."
