paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. DETAILS: tall PAPERBACK, cover price $10.95, attractive copy, near fine. CHASE, PATTIE. The contemporary quilt: new American quilts and fabric art. With Mimi Dolbier ; foreword by Radka Donnell. New York: E. P. Dutton, 1978, stated First Edition, 80pp., . Series: Dutton Paperback, D516. - beautifully illustrated in color. - Introductory text inside the front cover: In recent years there has been a strong revival of interest in quilts. Numerous new books have appeared on the subject, and, with few exceptions, they have dealt with traditional designs and techniques. The focus, therefore, has been entirely on conventional quiltmaking. - Without denying the relevance or the importance of tradition, it is now time that quiltmaking and other fabric arts be viewed in a new light The Contemporary Quilt presents in 141 color illustrations the work of some sixty women who are producing spectacular contemporary fabric art that beauti fully expands our understanding of quilts. In assembling this book, the authors chose quilts and fabric art that they believe best represent the many and varied elements of creative concept and technique that have brought quiltmaking out of the realm of functional domestic crafts to stand alongside the more universally recognized art forms such as painting, sculpture, and graphics as a valid means of artistic expression. - A wide spectrum of background and experience is represented here. Some of the contributing artists have received national recognition for their work through exhibitions, galleries, and reproductions in books and other publications. For others, this is the first exposure for their work. The artistic backgrounds, the life-styles, and the viewpoints of these women are as varied as their techniques. - Also, the artists were invited to comment on a number of subjects that seemed relevant. Excerpts from these comments, included at the front of the book, range from casual remarks to formal statements about their work, their specific techniques, and their intentions. Their insights were extremely valu able in giving shape to the book. They defined certain affinities and common points of reference for working with fabric; they defined as issues problems inherent in fabric arts: function versus aesthetics, art versus craft, tradition versus innovation, artistic and cultural chauvinisms as they affect their work. - Note on cover illustrations: The quilt on the front cover is Seeing by Sas Colby, 1976. Silk and cotton. 78" x 60". Pieced, appliqued, Xerox photo-transferred, and quilted. (Private collection) The quilt on the back cover is Bumpy Quilt by Jody Klein, 1973. Cotton velveteen and cotton. 60" x 45". Hand dyed, pieced, stuffed, and quilted. (Artist's collection). 9780525475231 ISBN 0525475230. …
