(25 cm.) ix[3]1-352p. Frontispiece engraving plus 13 full-page engravings by L.A. Peterson. Black cloth blocked in gilt and with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and with vignettes in gilt on the front cover and the spine. Endpapers are black and white drawings by L.A. Patterson. Top edge red, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Just touches of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, gilt bright (! "It pops," as we say in the book trade.), all illustrations present and in fine condition, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket spine quite faded, as usual, else near fine to fine. Lawrence Andrew Patterson (1896-1964), printmaker, illustrator, and teacher was born in Fresno and died in San Mateo, California. After service in WWI he studied for two years at the California School of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley. Patterson's book illustration commissions include full page illustrations and small vignettes for the 1926 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam published by Johnck and Kibbee, San Francisco. In 1927 he created fifteen illustrations for the English version of Golden Tales of Anatole France published by Dodd, Mead & Company. Patterson also illustrated Harris Merton Lyons' The Wind in the Lilacs published in 1929; Richard Middleton's poem Queen Melanie and the Wood-Boy published in 1931; and Douglas S. Watson's book West Wind ?The Life story of Joseph Reddeford Walker, Knight of the Golden Horseshoe published in 1934. He produced several limited edition art prints and taught art at San Mateo Community College. Just an exquisitely illustrated edition of GOLDEN TALES!
