Patterson was the Minister at Falkirk at the time of his death in 1835. In this prize winning essay he discusses the Character of the citizens of Athens, using Ancient literary sources. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. A beautiful 2 volume set, half bound dark green leather with five banded spine enhanced with gilt. Some minor foxing to end papers but rest of text quite clean. Fold out maps and illustrations still attached and intact although vol I has small tear to map. Both volumes in very good condition, boards show shelf wear and usage, spines have very slight rubbing , but hinges are fully intact. Previous owners name and address on front free end papers of both volumes. A lovely collectors set.

Leather over boards. Zustand: As described. Hardcover full calf leather over boards. Large Folio. lxiii, 1368 pp. Illustrated with 47 engraved plates, including maps, frontispiece portrait of Rev. John Brown, and engraved title page. Marbled edges. Blind tooled decorative border on front and back boards. Dentelle edges. Black leather label with "Brown's Bible" pasted on the Spine. Ownership inscription on the front flyleaf "Alexander Stewart Headitoron of Cullen Gamerie May 5th 1852"). Pages lightly foxed and age toned, but generally bright. Occasional small ink mark. Spine and boards are worn, frayed, and bumped. The leather of the front hinge is cracked entirely. Front board still attached by the cords. This family bible saw a fair amount of use. A note on the provenance: this copy belonged to one Alexander Stewart, born 1808, based on the signature and the filled in family register. Mr. Stewart's inscription is a little tricky to place -- Cullen is a village and Gamrie a parish both located in Banffshire, Scotland (though Gamrie now is apart of Aberdeenshire), but they are geographically separate. The name "Headitoron" is also a mystery -- it is possibly a variation on the Scots spelling of Haddington (Haidintoun), but it is not clear if this was part of Mr. Stewart's name or some title or position he held. The word does not appear again in the family register. Included in this copy is a tipped-in engraved portrait of Robert Burns from the Banffshire Journal (January 25th, 1859) commemorating the centennial of the poet's birth. No edition marks. Possible Second or third edition by this publisher.

George Brecht, Eric Andersen, Milan Kní ák and Ben Vautier sent scores or texts. A phone call from Al Hansen in Cologne was amplified over the PA system. Francesco Conz came from Italy and Michael Berger from Germany. Many of Bob s former students and my graduate students were all actively engaged in the organization and performance of the various activities and events. It began with Bob s iconic piece 2 Inches on the porch roof, and then helium filled balloons stamped with TRACE BOB WATTS were pushed out of the window of the room where Bob died to float up into the blue sky and join Bob s spirit. It was a fantastically beautiful day. The day was filled with food, music, performance, conversation and fellowship among a great gathering of friends. There was an auction to raise funds for a Robert Watts Scholarship for the Rutgers MFA graduate program that Bob had helped to start. Phil Corner was auctioneer. Joe Jones, Larry Miller and Ben Patterson collaborated to adapt a remote controlled battery-powered boat with a paddle wheel dispenser to spread some of Bob s ashes into the pond. It took some coaxing from them for it to achieve its mission. There was a 21-gun salute with a variety of funny guns and some real ones fired by members of the local gun club. Ben Patterson as Flux Admiral fired the final shot, a rocket from the canon of his USS Robert Watts that he had built and which capsized when launched. As events at the pond drew to a close, a small plane, at Eric Andersen s request, circled overhead with a banner saying "MOON." The pilot waved. We waved back. The day ended with a score sent by Allan Kaprow, What s Watts Watts, where we added up the wattage of all the lights in Bob s house, turning them on as we counted, with Larry Miller announcing the totals, and leaving the house ablaze as we departed into the fading evening light." - Geoff Hendricks, From Job Interview to FluxLux, a 32 year friendship with Bob Watts.
