Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. After food, medicine and spices of vegetable origin gained prime importance in human life. The spices vis--vis condiments undoubtedly got more currency even in historical times. The history of wars, voyages, travelogues, trades, discovery of new world and water ways, etc. are all replete with references to them. In modern times, their economic significance increased multifold as they are employed not only because of primary functions but also due to their secondary ones. The worldwide demand for processed foods, integral part of modern way of human life, has further geared up their research. In view of all these, the present authors thought worthwhile to write a book encompassing all these aforesaid perspectives. The first chapter of introduction briefly reviews history of spices, their forms and composition, primary and secondary functions. The spices and condiments used world-over are clubbed under 60 titles. An attempt has been made to focus their origin, history, varieties, chemical constituents, properties and multipurpose uses, with particular emphasis on processed products. Fairly vast and relevant bibliography will be useful for all those interested in this plant group. The book is useful to the students, teachers and research workers in botany, plant sciences, agriculture, pharmacy and medicine. It is hoped useful to the industries of food products, perfumery, medicine and agriculture products, apart from academicians engaged in undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

Medicinal plants: A scenario. 4.The Present work. 5. The state of Maharashtra. Part II: Herbal Materia Medica of Maharashtra: Enumeration. Bibliography. Index. In primitive human societies, the process of acquiring knowledge about plants and medicinal utility was initiated concomitantly. Later both diverged from each other. The former led to the foundation of plant science and latter to medicine. Medicine developed from the desire and effort to heal human ailments and as such, origin of medicine is natural and traditional. Knowledge of medicine gradually developed in some organized systems of medicine worldwide. These systems are based on their own theories, principles and practices. Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda, is a proud heritage of India. Although so, the treasure of Ayurveda has passed through the vicissitudes of time and various reigns. The present book is an attempt to collate information on herbs, generally mentioned in Ayurvedic literature and those found in the Maharashtra. Their chemical constituents, exact botanical identity, local plant names, parts used, phenology, besides properties and uses of drugs. It will be useful to the students, teachers, research workers in the faculty of medicine and science, apart from pharmaceutical industries and enthusiasts. About 450 plant species have been carefully presented to help enhance the science of Ayurveda in particular.
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. India is one of the richest floristic regions of the world. Its plant wealth is being used since antiquity for various purposes. The plants are referred by their scientific names but usually ignoring their bases and meaning. Origins of Plant Names is a decade long effort of the author encompassing about 3297 genera 974 species of Indian territory. It informs about meanings origins or history of plant names. It includes wild as well as cultivated indigenous or exotic plants. Single reference book was a long felt necessity. This book will help satisfy the needy. Hooker to the conclusion that "India has no flora as a separate entity but is an admixture of the floras from adjacent countries". However, post-independence attempts have convincingly demonstrated that India has a flora of its own. India has about 33% taxa endemic and is reported to harbour more endemic species of plants than any other region of the world except Australia. It has also approximately half of world's aquatic flowering plants. There findings are the result of extensive and intensive studies in our country. Although so, still there are certain underexplored areas in our country. Khandesh is one such region of State of Maharashtra. Hooker and Thompson (1853) regarded it a botanically distinct sub-province. The earlier attempts, to date, in this region are far from satisfaction. Satpura ranges, part of which extend in Dhule district, are considered as one of the major 'hot spots' of endemic and genetic diversity of plants in India. It, therefore, appeared necessary to intensify the floristic activity in Dhule district in order to know the present status of the flora and understand economic potential."The flora deals with 1133 taxa spread out under 134 families of Angiosperms excluding Poaceae. It is based on the author collections and few of those published earlier from this district. Requisite information about the district pertaining to its topography, geology and soils, general features of rainfall, temperature etc., vegetation types, floristic analysis, the past botanical surveys, ethnobotanical information, endangered, endemic and rare plants, cultivated or ornamental plants, weeds, exotics etc. have been incorporated."Keys to families, genera and species, recent nomenclature, selected synonyms, brief relevant botanical description and notes on habitat, phenology, distribution, local names and uses have been provided. Places of collections are given at the end."This flora will be useful to the needy students and teachers of botany at undergraduate and post-graduate classes, research scholars, forest and other government offices, ecologists, geologists, ethnobotanists, agriculturists, phytogeographers, naturalists etc. in their teaching, research and management or developmental programmes." It justifies the present state of knowledge with reference to crop history, initial and latest developments with evolutionary approach based on karyotaxonomic and geographical evidence. The author has endeavored to dilate attempts for crop domestication and cultivation by worldwide human societies. These are supported by various considerations like ethnology, philology, ancient and religious treatises, archaeological evidence, works of pioneers, various human affairs, etc. He further based his writing on botanical conclusions accrued from distribution, number of varieties, occurrence of wild types, agro-botanical characteristics, time and place of origin, and worldwide usage of each crop species. The treatise is a highly-acclaimed source of information of crop plants useful to degree and post-graduate students of botany, agriculture and food science as a main text and reference work for researchers. It is recommendable for use in any country especially in the English speaking world. It will also appeal to the general reader, being rich in contents. In a nutshell, this treatise is a history of development of food crops. And therefore, a humble attempt has been made, first, to ascertain what was actually done or said, and second, to emphasize the causes of success or failure. Truly, it is the study of causes that makes history more fruitful and a basis for evaluating the future events with confidence. (jacket).
