Corners a little bumped, some wear at head and tail of spine, lettering-label very slightly chipped. "'O! blest shall be the holy friar / Of fair Iona's hallowed Isle, / Who sung the requiem of my sire, / And cursed the foe that wrought him guile . . .'" Walter Paterson (1789-1849) was a sometime Professor of English at Jena, in Germany, and minister of Kirkurd, in Peeblesshire. A grandson of the stone-engraver Robert Paterson, the original of "Old Mortality", he acknowledges his debt to Walter Scott - "as it was through his friendship that I obtained access to these distinguished advantages [the useful advice of Mrs Maclean Clephane of Torloisk]; and from him that I derived courage to persevere in an undertaking, on the presumption of which I had often reflected with terror and distrust". A lovely collection of poetry, including historical, pastoral and Romantic poems appreciating the Scottish landscapes and life. These are written mainly by prominent authors Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns, as well as Allan Ramsay, who contributed with one poem 'A Dialogue of Marriage.'Richly illustrated with Scottish landscape painter John MacWhirter's illustrations in text engraved by R. Paterson, as well as a frontispiece. In the original publisher's gilt tooled cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some bumping and chipping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The front board is slightly marked, and the rear board has a minor faint damp marking. Internally, the hinges are slightly loose to the first page, otherwise generally firmly bound.
