After '[.] Puzzles, and Paradoxes,' the title continues: 'With a Series of Comic Lessons for Fireside Recreation.' Among the sections are 'Transposition of Letters', 'Conundrums', 'Enigmas and Riddles', 'Charades', 'Practical Puzzles and Paradoxes' and 'The Alliterative Lesson'. The second half of the volume is devoted to 'Parlour Games'. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on OCLC, and the only copy on COPAC at the National Library of Scotland, by which it is tentatively dated to the 1880s. See Image.

In den Warenkorb9pp, 12mo. On twi bifoliums and a single leaf, only the first of the bifoliums carrying the letterhead. In good condition, on aged paper. Folded once and in an envelope with 'Whist for 2. | Rules by Miss Stanton.' on cover. The letterhead has the feel of the 1920s, but the handwriting is Victorian, and presumably that of an old…spinster. The first bifolium carries a separate set of instructions over four pages, headed 'Whist for two', and concluding: 'Hope you can read it excuse blots for I cant see what I have written'. The second bifolium carries another set of instructions, over three pages, with no heading, beginning: 'The dealer deals 11 cards to each person face downwards and then asks his adversary to name the trump the cards already dealt being placed on the table in this way'. This second section concludes: 'It is a good game for two person [sic] and is best played with 2 packs of cards each person keeping his own pack -'. The single leaf carries a two page set of instructions headed 'How to play the game of Mrs. Allport'. This begins: 'Having cut the cards the lowest deals - and the other party names the trump'.

Conceived as the first comprehensive encyclopaedia of pastimes enjoyed by the modern British gentleman and gentlewoman, the highly successful Badminton Library took its name from the estate of the Duke of Beaufort, who edited th…e series. Various other peers contributed volumes, such as Lord Walsingham, who authored Shooting, and the Earl of Suffolk, who wrote Racing and Steeplechasing. The first volume, Hunting (1885), was dedicated to the Prince of Wales. These upper-class credentials were integral to the original conception of the series, but it was assumed that the Duke of Beaufort's contribution "would be purely nominal" (Campbell, p. 128). As it was, the 8th Duke was an enthusiastic and highly active participant in the project. Barry Campbell, The Badminton Tradition, 1978. 30 vols, octavo (180 x 130 mm). Copiously illustrated with plates, some coloured, illustrations in text. Contemporary red crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt with raised bands, compartments tooled with gilt sporting motifs, Turkish over Spanish moiré pattern marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt. Edges only miminally rubbed, joints of Racing and Steeplechasing cracked with inner hinges reinforced, contents foxed. A very good set.

Besides sports it also gives the rules for various card games and other games like chess, draughts (checkers), etc., and contains about 100 different types of magic and conjuring tricks. Also included is an alphabet for deaf people. The book closes with popular explanations of electricity, magnetism, optics, mathematics and arithmetic, the use of the magic lantern and the microscope, etc.With a contemporary owner's inscription ("J.E. Engelbrecht") on the title page. The spine is somewhat discoloured. The work is lightly browned and foxed, but otherwise in very good condition.l NCC (8 copies). Contemporary gold-tooled blue-green morocco, with a red morocco title label on the spine lettered in gold, on both boards a single fillet frame with cornerpieces, gilt edges. With numerous wood engraved illustrations in the text. Pages: X, 282 pp.
