Bound within the first part of Summi Angliae Cancellarii, 1638 In contemporary full calf, gilt double fillet border to covers, spine with 6 raised bands & ornamental tool within double fillet gilt borders in the compartments, except second compartment with direct gilt titling, rubbed, some wear to extremities with tailcap showing, some splitting along upper joint, folio (292 x 190 mm). Internally, initial blank (Pi1) bound before A1, woodcut headpieces and historiated initials, a few leaves with small blank paper loss to outer top and bottom corners, bound with an incomplete copy of Bacon's Baronis de Verulamio (1638) bound before and after the Instauratio Magna, late 17th-century/early 18th-century engraved armorial bookplate of 'R. L. B. D. F.' to front paste down, with contemporary ink ownership inscription of 'Juliani le Tac Rothomagensis' at head, with the same owner's neat ink ownership name at head of title of the second work (Baronis de Verulamio, 1638) and with a small circular library stamp of Petit Seminaire de Caen lower down on the same title, engraved title after Simon van de Passe, second issue with e3 canceled (as usual) and e4r adding errata and omitting the name of Bill Norton from the colophon. (ownership inscriptions) Julien Le Tac (or Letac, c.1640-1720), lawyer at Pont-l'Eveque, employed in the Court of Accounts, Aid and Finance for Normandy, and sometime resident of St Godard de Rouen; 2. (bookplate) Jean-Baptiste Remi Le Bas de Fresne (1723-1773), archdeacon of Gace, clerical advisor to the parliament of Rouen, dean of the chapter in Lisieux and builder of the deanery of Lisieux. His coat of arms depicts a spitting winged dragon. 3. (library stamp) Petit Seminaire de Caen. Gibson 103b; Grolier / Horblit 8B; Pforzheimer pp. XIX-XXI; PMM 119; STC 1163. First edition of one the most important works of the 17th century, an unsophisticated copy in an unrestored contemporary binding. 'Bacon conceived a massive plan for the reorganisation of scientific method and gave purposeful thought to the relation of science to public and social life' and 'his insistence on making science experimental and factual, rather than speculative and philosophical, had powerful consequences' (PMM).

Cut on the margins.[NL] Pieter Grijspeer was leraar te Haarlem bij de Doopsgezinden tussen 1625 en 1655. Hij gaf stichtelijke gezangen uit. Adriaan Spinniker is een Nederlandse dichter en letterkundige (1676-1754), geboren in Groningen en overleden in Haarlem. Hij is vooral bekend door het emblematische werk 'Leerzame Zinnebeelden'.

Large elaborate print with the coat of arms of Frederik Hendrik. From Girard Thibault: 'Academie de l'espée de Girard Thibault d'Anvers: ou se demonstrent par reigles mathematiques sur le fondement d'un cercle mysterieux la theorie et pratique des (.) secrets du maniement des armes a pied et a cheval.' Leiden: Bonaventura Elzevier en Abraham Elzevier, 1630. The attribution to Simon van de Passe was made on the basis of his signature apprearing on one of the plates, comparable to the Fredrik Hendrik's. Etching and engraving on paper; plate mark: 473 x 343 mm, total: 500 x 354 mm; only state; a couple of small brown stains, some rubbing, otherwise in great condition. Hollstein 140.

Allegory of Frederick Henry as the protector of Religion and Freedom. Frederick Henry (Dutch: Frederik Hendrik; 1584-1647) was the sovereign prince of Orange and stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1625 until his death in 1647. In the final seven years of his life, additionally he was the stadtholder of Groningen (1640-1647). Above the oval portrait are two angels playing shofars and holding a wreath with the coat of arms of the seven United Provinces. Libertas and Religio are standing at the sides, in front ot the prince personifications of Negotiatio (Negotiation), Politia (Politic), Prudentia (Prudence) and Victoria (Victory). Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 484 x 754 mm., platemark 450 x 727 mm., engraved by Simon van de Passe (1564-1637) after Adriaen van Nieulandt (I) (1568-1658), dated 1628. In good condition, but with two horizontal folds over the width of the sheet (one folding up the caption area (probably for storage). An old restoration to a tear in the top edge (extending minimally into the image area). Some soiling in the margins. Two different states of 'Liberum Belgium', allegorical representation of the prosperity of the Dutch Provinces. The plate was modified in three areas: the portrait above in the middle, below in the coat of arms, in the plynth below on which hangs a lion skin with inscription and in the signature and address below with dates. The first is dated 1624. Prince Maurice of Orange is seated at the top of a throne. Above two angels playing shofars and holding a wreath with the coat of arms of the seven United Provinces. Libertas and Religio are standing at the sides, in front ot the prince personifications of Negotiatio (Negotiation), Politia (Politic), Prudentia (Prudence) and Victoria (Victory). On the plynth at the bottom: 'LE MAINTIENDRAY / MAURITIUS PRINCEPS AURIACUS. Et nobilissimi Ordinis Garterij Eques.' Further 14 lines in Latin by Daniel Heyns: 'Hispaniae domitor gentis. omnibus aequa datur / Daniel Heynsius' and further the Privilege and the address: 'Adrianus a Nieuwlandt Inventor et Pictor, Symon de Pas sculptor, Anno MDCXXIIII' The second is dated 1628. On the throne an orange tree, its branches encicling a bust portrait of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange. On the plynth the inscription reads: 'PATRIAEQ PATRIQ / FREDERICO HENRICO D.G. PRINCIPI / Arausionensium, Comiti Nassaviae. et Equiti Regii Odinis Garterii.'
