Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Japanese Traditions of Christianity' is a significant historical compilation that examines the development and survival of the Christian faith in Japan across several centuries. Edited by Montague Paske-Smith, this work bridges the gap between early Japanese spiritual traditions and the diplomatic realities of the 19th century. The collection brings together rare translations of old Japanese texts that reveal the inner life and enduring traditions of the Japanese Christian community, particularly those who maintained their faith in secret during periods of prohibition. The volume is particularly notable for its inclusion of detailed British consular reports documenting the severe religious persecutions that occurred between 1868 and 1872. These official accounts provide a harrowing look at the pressures faced by believers during the transition into the Meiji era, offering a unique Western diplomatic perspective on Japanese internal policy and human rights. By synthesizing indigenous narratives with external political observations, 'Japanese Traditions of Christianity' provides a multifaceted view of religious resilience. This work is an invaluable primary resource for those interested in Asian history, the global history of the Christian church, and the evolution of religious liberty in East Asia. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
