Color frontispiece, folding with tissue guard. Both forewords by Prince Tokugawa Iyesato and Count Matsura Atsushi and in Japanese and English, with photogravure of Prince and Count, protected by tissue guards. History of the Japanese trade with Europeans from the 16th through the 19th century with merchants from Portugal, Spain, Holland and England on the island of Fei-luan (Hirado). It was named by a Chinese geographer in the days of the Ming dynasty because its shape resembles that of a phoenix on the wing, and because Hirado and Fei-luan approximate each other in pronunciation. The account was written by the British Consul at Osaka, Mr. Paske-Smith. Beautifully illustrated with photogravures in color and b/w throughout. Supplements in the rear pocket include facsimile reprints of The Japan Herald" from November 1861, "The Nagasaki Shipping List and Advertiser" from July 1861, a reproduction of the "List of Foreign Hongs and Residents and Plan of the Foreign Concession at Nagasaki" from 1867, and a folding map of Nagasaki from 1802, printed in three colors. Binding with light wear along edges and lightly rubbed and sunned spine.
