Color frontispiece, folding with tissue guard. Both forewords by Prince Tokugawa Iyesato and Count Matsura Atsushi and in Japanese and English, with photogravure of Prince and Count, protected by tissue guards. History of the Japanese trade with Europeans from the 16th through the 19th century with merchants from Portugal, Spain, Holland and England on the island of Fei-luan (Hirado). It was named by a Chinese geographer in the days of the Ming dynasty because its shape resembles that of a phoenix on the wing, and because Hirado and Fei-luan approximate each other in pronunciation. The account was written by the British Consul at Osaka, Mr. Paske-Smith. Beautifully illustrated with photogravures in color and b/w throughout.
