First edition. Illustrated with nine monochrome plates, including a frontispiece, and a large folding map. Collated, complete. A detailed record of Parry"s visit to the headquarters of the Syrian Church in Mesopotamia, with chapters on Mardin, Deir-el-Za"feran, Syrian villages, Tur Abdin, Nisibis, Mosul, and the monastery of Sheikh Mattah. The work also includes sections on the old Syrian Church, the Yazidis of Mosul, and a translation of an Arabic manuscript, with a preface by Brooke Foss Westcott, Bishop of Durham. Oswald H. Parry was a Magdalen College, Oxford, graduate whose travels in Mesopotamia produced this unusually detailed account of the Syrian Church and its monasteries. Loosely inserted are related pieces concerning the Syrian Church, including The Ancient Church in Syria and two numbered extracts from Parry"s letters from Mardin, dated 1892. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, smart. Spine slightly faded. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight cracking to upper extremity of front joint. Slight rubbing to boards. Ink ownership inscription to first blank, dated 1946. Slight offsetting to endpapers with the odd minor mark. hinges slightly strained, with small portion of webbing exposed, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd light spot to first and last few leaves. Very Good. book.
