A bibliographical press obituary of a most interesting nature is loosely inserted, telling us that Mr Parrish of Dormy House, Pine Valley, New Jersey, USA, was an avid book collector, who had the foresight to house his collections in a fire proof wing of the house. It burnt down in 1944 but the collection survived unscathed though the exposure killed him. Reader, beware. RARE , of course. The recipient, Sidney Herbert Williams, F.S.A. was a fellow London book collector of Lewis Carroll and published both a Bibliography of him in 1924 and A Handbook in 1931. He also was fearful of his collection being incinerated by German Incendiary bombs and sold his entire collection during WW2, excepting a related tin box. …

Morris Longstreth Parrish (1867-1944) was a successful Philadelphia stockbroker and so fastidious about the condition of the books in his collections that his name became associated thus: Parrish condition, i.e., the highest quality condition standard of first editions. Parrish also collected 24 other Victorian novelists, including Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Lytton, Barrie, Hardy, Stevenson, Dickens and Thackeray. His collections were donated to Princeton, where most of it is housed in its own room in Firestone Library, which recreates the Parrish library at Dormy House, in Pine Valley, New Jersey on the edge of the famous golf course.
