He composed most of these writi…ngs between the ages of 12 and 18, and they were posthumously discovered by his friends and family, who desired printed copies. In den WarenkorbSee Parris's entry in the Oxford DNB. The subject of the letter is his work 'restoring' James Thornhill's paintings inside the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Beginning in 1853 and ending three years later, Parris worked on scaffolding he had designed for the purpose thirty years before. His efforts were not well received: he was a…ccused of completely repainting Thornhill's work, to its detriment. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased, with minor traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded twice. Having received the recipient's 'favor', he begins by sending his 'regards to Mr and Mrs Hall', i.e. Samuel Carter Hall (1800-1889), editor of the of the Art Journal and New Monthly Magazine, and his wife Anna Maria Hall (1800-1881). From the context of the letter it would appear that Duffane has requested information for an article for one of the two magazines of which Hall is editor. He is sending 'a very rough & hastily scrawl'd account of my apparatus &c at St Pauls, which You may perhaps distil something from'. He points out that the account he is sending 'is quite different from what has recently appear'd in the Times &c'. He feels that 'the shortest notice will be most advisable', but asks him to 'make what You please out of it'. The letter ends: 'I am at the Cathedral every day and shall be glad to shew You all particulars if you will enquire for me any time you are passing'.

(48) pp. 518 ll., (68) pp. Binding quite worn with some missing leather on back and front cover, front cover nearly loose, spotty foxing; a good, sound copy. At the top of the front flyleaf is the ownership entry: "Saml : Parris 12 . [undeciph…ered abbreviation for a month or time of year] 1676", below in the same hand: "prch 2 . 4". Below this ownership entry: "Warham Williams / Hic est Liber / Anno Domini 1721 Sept. 1". In Warham Williams' hand follows a paragraph of Latin text. At the top of the title page is again the ownwership entry of Warham Williams dated 1721 and a canceled entry of a contemporary ex libris. On the verso of the title in an unknown hand, possibly Warham's, is an English paragraph containing advice to ministers. Laid in is a small typed exhibition card: "Association. Calvin's Institutes; Geneva, 1637. Owned by Samuel Parris, Minister of Salem Farms (Danvers), the fool who started the Witchcraft. LOANED BY C. K. WILLIAMS". His ownership signature is on the front pastedown. Also laid in is the catalogue description of this book and its provenance by the late Frank Williams Oliver, Esq. (1920-2006), the colorful Chicago defense attorney and direct descendent of Warham and Samuel Williams (great-great grandson of Samuel Williams, the Third Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard). Frank Williams Oliver was the last owner of this volume in the Williams family. Purchased from his late widow, Andree Oliver. Parris' "Calvin" has an exceptional provenance. His purchase entry places the book in Parris' hands early in his life, some 13 years before he became minister in Salem Village. Parris was the 4th appointed in a series of unsuccessful attempts to keep a permanent minister. The witch trials began in 1692 and lasted 16 months. Parris was an active prosecutor, however his parish brought charges against him in 1693 for his part in the trials. Further disputes with him caused him to leave in 1697 for Boston, though he also preached in Stow, moving to Concord in 1704, later preaching in Sudbury, where he dies in 1720. This book followed him in his many moves landing in the hands of the pastor at Waltham, Warham Williams. It was handed down to a number of distinguished members of the Williams family. While minister at Salem Farms, Samuel Parris' (1653-1720) daughter, Elizabeth, and his niece, Abigail Williams (relationship to Williams family?), triggered through their bizarre behavior the Salem witch craze of 1692 led by Samuel Parris, the Puritan minister in Salem. Much has been written on the significance of this chapter in colonial history, e.g. Mary Beth Norton's, In the Devil's Snare - the Salem Withcraft Crisis of 1692 (2002). A biography of Parris has appeared: Larry Gragg, "A Quest for Security - the Life of Samuel Parris, 1653-1720" (1990). Warham Williams (1699-1751), father of Samuel Williams (1743-1817), was a son of John Williams (1644-1729) and one of the captives of the famous raid on Deerfield Village in 1704. Warham, a graduate of Harvard College in 1719, became pastor at Waltham, Massachusetts in 1723 and held that position until his death. Charles Kilbourne Williams (1782-1853), the son of Samuel Williams, held a number of positions in Vermont government including Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court (1834-1846) and Governor (1850-1852). It is not clear how this volume made its way from Samuel Parris to Warham Williams. Parris died in 1720 and Warham's ownership note is dated 1721. Parris' biographer, Larry Gragg, notes that Parris' son, Noyes (b.1699), was willed his father's whole library of books; Warham obtained the book from him, or perhaps the library, or part of it, was sold. Parris' ownership date, 1676, is quite early for a surviving dated Pilgrim Century book of a famous historical figure.
