Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First edition. Spotting on the boards with worn edges and corners and the rear spine hinge is starting to detach else good. Signed by the author. Scarce signed. Olive Katherine Parr, 1874 - 1955, was an English writer who claimed to be descended from Catherine Parr, wife of Henry VIII. Considered by some to have been an egotist, she wrote about Darthmoor under the pen name Beatrice Chase and was often referred to as "The Lady of the Moor" after being used as the central character in John Oxenham's novel of the same name. While working for social reform in the slums of London she contracted T.B. and was forced to the countryside where she began writing. Parr became famous for her romanticized stories of the Moors, but after being accused of "infamous profiteering" by a bookseller she was forced to sell her books from her home. The end of her life would find her embittered, having to sell her jewelry and library to get by. She died on July 3, 1955. Her gravestone reads "Pray for Olive Katherine Parr" on one side and "Beatrice Chase 1874 - 1955" on the other.
