In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1956: THE FLYING SAUCER LEAVES SCIENCE FICTION AND ENTERS THE HANGAR. A striking Atomic Age issue of Mechanix Illustrated, dominated by Gurney Miller's dramatic flying-saucer cover and the announcement U.S. AIR FORCE REVEALS OUR FLYING SAUCER. Inside, noted science writer and rocketry popularizer Willy Ley explains the proposed disc-shaped aircraft then associated with Avro Canada's work for the U.S. Air Force. Rather than treating the saucer simply as extraterrestrial speculation, Ley presents it as an engineering problem-placing this issue squarely at the intersection of 1950s UFO culture, Cold War aviation, and technological futurism. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: THE HOW-TO-DO MAGAZINE. Illustrated magazine in color pictorial wrappers, priced 25 cents. Cover artwork by Gurney Miller depicts a disc-shaped aircraft rocketing above a city. The March 1956 issue includes photographs, diagrams, technical drawings, advertisements, and spot illustrations throughout. Ley's four-page cover feature, 'How the Flying Saucer Works,' begins on page 78 with a dramatic two-page illustrated opening. Other features include Frank Tinsley's 'Why Don't We Build an Atoms-for-Peace Dirigible?'; Tom McCahill's retrospective 'My Ten Years of Car-Testing'; R. C. Sebold's 'Is the Pilot Obsolete?'; Robert Hertzberg's 'The Gun That Refused to Die'; and the magazine's characteristic assortment of automobile, home-workshop, electronics, and do-it-yourself material. Period advertising appears throughout, including automotive, radio, television, tools, technical-training, and mail-order advertising. CONDITION: CAREFULLY HANDLED. Very Good. Binding remains sound. Moderate rubbing and handling wear to the pictorial wrappers, with edge and corner wear and small creases. Interior pages remain clean with expected age-toning. The illustrated flying-saucer cover remains bright and visually strong. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: WHEN THE FLYING SAUCER BECAME AN ENGINEERING PROJECT. Willy Ley's 'How the Flying Saucer Works' is an unusually vivid artifact from the point where popular flying-saucer fascination met genuine Cold War aerospace experimentation. The article discusses disc-shaped aircraft development associated with Avro Canada and the U.S. Air Force, presenting the saucer not merely as UFO speculation but as a potentially workable military aircraft. The article continues to appear in bibliographies devoted to UFO-like aircraft and the history of flying-saucer technology. ATOMIC AGE OPTIMISM. The same issue contains Frank Tinsley's 'Why Don't We Build an Atoms-for-Peace Dirigible?'-an ambitious proposal for nuclear-powered lighter-than-air flight. Together the two features capture a particularly exuberant moment in mid-century technological culture, when atomic power, radical aircraft, automation, and futuristic transportation seemed close enough to illustrate, diagram, and build.
