Zustand: Very good. - Thick octavo, maroon cloth in a dust wrapper. The dust jacket is chipped with a tear to the top edge of its front panel. Its rear panel is soiled. viii & 1593 pages plus ads printed on blue paper. Illustrated with theatre seating plans & with a folding chart of measurements of London stages. The chart is slightly misfolded & the top & front edges of the last panel are creased. Very good in a good dust wrapper. Thirteenth edition. Originally compiled by John Parker. Edited by Freda Gaye.

Contents intact but cloth on all volumes generally poor, with spine of vol II detached, others torn or loose. Excellent reference with high quality woodcuts, which reached its apogee with the later editions in the 1850s. This version is a re-edition of volumes I and II, with the separate Companion, with its additional plates and descriptions, published as vol III. Would make a nice restoration project.

Vol 1: 528pp; Vol 2 Part 1: 104pp (Descriptive Index of Illustrations), 136 plates; Vol 2 Part 2: 128 further plates, 47pp Index; over 1700 woodcut illustrations across the three volumes, 12 of the plates are coloured. 23x17, brown quarter cloth binding with attractive embossed patterned boards. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed, a few minor marks, generally good to very good, some foxing to title pages but otherwise very good. Excellent reference with high quality woodcuts. This edition generally considered the best.

5th Edition. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat dulled and rubbed as with age. Scattered foxing throughout. Remains quite well-preserved overall.
