[Full collation available.] Bound in contemporary straight-grained red morocco. On the covers, a gilt grapevine roll within a gilt fillet border. On the spine, five panels. Gilt heads in profile (Hippocrates?) in the first, third, fourth and fifth panels. Title gilt to the second panel. At the tail, the binder's signature gilt: "REL.P.MESLANT" Gilt fillet to the edges of the boards, and dashed gilt inside dentelle. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Lower fore-corners rebuilt, and upper fore-corners bumped. Mild rubbing generally. Gilt red sheep ex-libris of Henri Burton to the recto of the first free end-paper. Hippocrates of Cos (ca. 460-370 BC) was a physician, commonly known as the "father of medicine," whose writings and those of his followers -- the Corpus Hippocraticum -- are the basis of western medical knowledge and theory. His Oath is the best-known of his writing, but the Hippocratic corpus had tremendous influence on the practice of medicine into the modern era. Hippocrates' Aphorisms, like all aphorisms, were especially popular because they were brief and memorable. The first and most famous begins "vita brevis, ars longa," (life is short, art long-lived) which Pariset translates "la vie est court, l'art est long" (pp. 2-3). This does not especially strike one as particularly medical, until one continues: "occasio præceps, experientia fallax, judicium difficile. Oportet autem non modò se ipsum exhibere quæ oportet facientem, sed etiam ægrum, et præsentes, et externa" (opportunity is fleeting, experience misleading, judgment difficult. One must not oneself do just what must be done, but also the ill person, and those nearby and surrounding). It is, in fact, quite a strikingly modern approach to medicine: a collaborative effort between doctor, patient, family and community. The binder, P. Meslant, comes from a distinguished family of Parisian binders, associated in particular with the Empress Josephine, Louis-Philippe I and other members of the Orleans family. He seems to have had a special line in small books, exquisite in their restrained richness. To the physician and fellow member of the Académie royale de médecine Paul Jolly (1790-1879), informing him that Jolly's 1834 publication "De l'état sanitaire" has been ordered to be deposited in the library of the Academy and thanking him officially: "L'académie a reçu, avec beaucoup d'intérêt, un exemplaire de l'ouvrage que vous venez de publier sous le titre de : De l'État sanitaire et des moyens d'assainissement des Landes de Bordeaux. Elle en a ordonné le dépôt dans la Bibliothèque, et m'a chargé de vous transmettre des remerciemens. Étienne Pariset (5.8.1770 Grand, Vosges - 3.7.1847 Paris) Arzt und Psychiater, ab 1814 an Bicêtre, übernahm 1819 die Leitung der Abteilung für Geisteskranke und wechselte 1826 an die Salpêtrière; 1819 wurde er in die "Commission pour l'amélioration du sort des aliénés" berufen. 1842 wurde er Mitglied der Académie des sciences, 1822 Sekretär (später "secrétaire perpétuel") der Académie nationale de médecine, und 1845 gründete er als erster Präsident die Société protectrice des animaux. "Mon cher et honoré confrère, j'achève votre brochure. À la page 16, j'ai pleuré d'attendrissement et d'admiration. C'est un délicieux tableau - que celui de ces hommes pleins de sentiment . qui concourent . à sauver la vie d'une pauvre femme. Je reconnais là mon cher Amussat, si respectable et si habile. Pariset gehört zu den prägenden Vertretern der frühen französischen "aliénistes", die im Anschluss an Pinel und Esquirol eine humanere Behandlung der Geisteskranken und die "moralische Behandlung" propagierten. Als Mitglied der staatlichen Kommission zur Verbesserung des Loses der Geisteskranken und als leitender Arzt an Bicêtre und der Salpêtrière verband er klinische Tätigkeit, Verwaltungserfahrung und medizinalpolizeiliches Engagement. Der Brief zeigt einen sehr persönlichen, emotionalen Ton: Pariset berichtet, dass er bei der Lektüre von Troussels Broschüre (Seite 16) "aus Rührung und Bewunderung geweint" habe und lobt das "Tableau" von Männern "voll Gefühl", die gemeinsam das Leben einer "armen Frau" retten. Damit hebt er sowohl die moralische Haltung (Sentiment, Mitgefühl) als auch die fachliche Leistung ("merveilleuse" Operation) hervor, ganz im Sinne der Verbindung von moralischer und somatischer Medizin, wie sie für die französische Psychiatrie der ersten Jahrhunderthälfte charakteristisch ist. Bemerkenswert ist Parisets Hinweis, er wolle die "génération" (Entstehung/Genese) dieser Fälle verstehen, da in medizinischen Tatsachen immer ein "originaler Punkt" bleibe, der ihn in Verlegenheit bringe und den es zu entdecken gelte. August 1770, besuchte seit 1786 das Collége zu Nantes, kämpfte seit 1782 als Soldat, Anfangs an der Grenze, später in der Venée, studirte und promovirte 1805 zu Paris mit der These: "Sur les hémorrhagies utérines", liess sich daselbst nieder, hielt am Athenaeum Vorlesungen über Physiologie, beobachtete 1809 mit MAZET fas gelbe Fieber bei Cadix und 1821 mit BAILLY in Barcelona, von wo er 1830 zurückgekehrt er eine lebenslängliche Pension erhuielt, war seit 1814 Arzt am Bicêtre, seit 1826 ord., von 1833-1839 Chefarzt an der Salpêtrière, bekam 1829 den Auftrag, zum Studium der Pest nach Aegypten zu gehen, von wo er 1830 zurückkehrte, und starb am 3.Juli 1847. Er war Secretär der "Académie de médecine", und ist in dieser Eigenschaft besonders berühmt geworden als Verfasser zahlreicher, durch ihren glänzenden Styl ausgezeichneter Éloges auf Mitglieder der Academie, die unter dem Titel: "Histoire des membres de l'Académie royale de médecine ou Recueil des éloges lus dans séances publiques" zusammengefasst und von E.F.Dubois d'Amiens (Praris 1850) herausgegeben wurde.
