Original gilt-stamped calf. Very good copy. As a Jesuit priest and a scientist, Pardies, whose works, said to be written with great neatness and elegance*, were popular in their day, "presented a problem to his order. From the time of his appointment at La Rochelle his superiors distrusted him because he was known 'to pursue strange opinions avidly,' and until his death he was continually obliged to compromise his true views on philosophy and science, to the point that they cannot be established with certainty . . . Although Pardies did not have the time to devote the full measure of his abilities to science, he was undoubtedly one of those vigorous intellects that science always needs, along with great discoverers, especially in an age of transition. That he was just such an intellect is evident from his pedagogical writings and his contacts with the pioneers of physics. . . His notions, as bold as they were naive, purported to demonstrate the spirituality of the soul by virtue of its capacity to understand the infinite through the 'clear and distinct ideas' of certain geometric arguments." â" Pierre Costabel, DSB X, pp. 314-315. *John Mason Good, Olinthus Gregory, Newton Bosworth, Pantologia: A New Cyclopaedia, Comprehending a Complete Series of Essays . . . vol. Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Fourth edition statement, the first edition having appeared in 1672. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. 2 tears to spine with losses. Surface wear to lower board. The work is constructed in two parts: an exposition of Cartesianism and all the reasoning of the Cartesians for the first, and a refutation for the second. This work by Pardies (1636-1673), mathematician and philosopher, had the greatest impact, undoubtedly because the defense was so weak that it was seen as a reinforcement of the Cartesian theory of mechanism.
