Sq octavo 20.5x18.5 cm., wrappers, (11) pp. (How a City is Built) Artwork by Alisa Ivanovna Poret (1902-1984), student of Pavel Filonov and Petrov-Vdkin, and intimate of Daniil Kharms about whom she left memoirs. Poret was a painter and illustrator of wonderful invention. A great deal of her work was destroyed in the siege of Leningrad. She began book illustration in 1925 and contributed to Chizh and Ezh. Her work has been recently reassessed and she is recognized as a jewel treasure of 20th century Soviet art. Author Ester Solomonovna Papernaia (1901-1987) was a writer, translator, and editor of Chizh. She was arrested in 1937 in the Detgiz case in Leningrad. OCLC locates seven holdings in North America.
