Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Architecture and Sculpture of the Udayesvara Temple. 2. The Metaphysics of Saivism and SaivaSiddhanta. 3. The Tattvaprakasaof BhojaParamara. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. A temple is an embodiment of the universe, it is all encompassing. There is much beyond what can be seen through the eye and this book has succeeded in providing a holistic understanding of the multi-layered fabric of the Udayesvara temple of UdayadityaParamara. It is indeed intriguing that the Paramaras were involved not only in building temples but also in formulating the canons for their architecture. As a result, we come across a unique style of temple architecture which was not seen before the ascendancy of the Paramaras. In this context, one often encounters representations which are enigmatic both in terms of iconography and the underlying philosophy. This book contains an intensive as well as extensive study of the Udayesvara temple based on primary textual sources including prominent Silpasastras and Saivagamas. It attempts to integrate art and architecture with religion and philosophy. A relevant context has been provided for the architectonic and sculptural analysis of the temple through an exemplary discourse in religion and metaphysics. (jacket).…

This catalogue is the result of a collaborative project between Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculptures, Viet Nam and National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology, New Delhi. Fifty-three sculptures from the collection of the Da Nang Museum have been studied in detail along with Indian sculptures to trace the historic relations between India and Viet Nam in the domain of art for a better understanding of the shared traditions of the two countries. The synergies between Indian and Cham art is evident particularly in its early phase of development when Cham art shows interface with artistic traditions across the Indian subcontinent. This catalogue also highlights the deep understanding of the silpasastras that the Cham sculptors possessed as these sculptures often follow iconographic injunctions given in ancient texts. The Cham sculptors also brought forward the indigenous interpretation of Indian canons and developed their own unique iconography. Influence and inspirations that voyaged between India and Viet Nam travelled through other Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Indonesia etc., binding together the entire region of South and Southeast Asia in a close-knit fabric.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book is a combination of both the theory of classical Indian music and its representation in visual arts in the form of ragachitras or raga paintings. It includes a textual, aesthetic and iconographic analysis of two significant sets of ragachitra folios from the Gem Palace Collection of the National Museum (New Delhi) and Bharat Kala Bhavan (Varanasi) through a comprehensive survey of primary sources in the form of musicological and iconographical treatises. In order to establish text-image coordination, verses of the ragachitras taken up in this book have been translated by the author from Sanskrit to English for the first time. The author s proficiency in Sanskrit, classical Indian music and Art History has been instrumental in making this book a scholarly publication. While some of them offer a scholarly discussion of the sources of Buddhist art in Central Asia and the scribes and artists who flourished in the region some others provide an in depth analysis of the Buddhist art as it thrived in such important regions as Gandhara Kucha Kizil and Dunhuang. Again there are papers which provide an interesting insight into the cross cultural facets of Central Asia connections between Buddhism and West Asi.…
