2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. He writes that 'The passing on of such a dear man as Herman leaves a blank in many many peoples lives & those who had the priviledge [sic] of his friendship can the better realise all you must be suffering at the present time.' He concludes by telling her that her 'grief is shared' by Finck's 'countless friends', and that she must have a 'sweet solace' in the memory of 'the many joyous times spent in his company'. The word 'Answered' is written at the head. Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last pieces played by the orchestra on the Titanic.

Miniature programme, 65 x 50 mm. 12 illustrated pages, card wrappers. The Co-operative Festivals, which celebrated the Co-operative Movement, were populated by representatives of numerous organisations from all over the country. They were held each August at the Crystal Palace from at least 1888 when over 27,000 visitors attended. This charming miniature booklet gives a complete programme of events from the opening to the firework display to finish. The Grand Exhibition of Co-operative Production displayed goods made in Britain by British labour, all non-sweated goods.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of glue from mount on blank reverse. He informs Walford that he is returning 'the notes of my career having made some slight alterations'. He suggests that it would be 'well for me to compare the proof with the drafts'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition, neatly placed by the second leaf in a windowpane mount. He has 'received an intimation' that his picture is in Bond Street ('from whence I must fetch it'), and is writing to say that he has 'two Pictures by my Father (one very small but a beautiful little bit) the other the Peak in Derbyshire; a Landscape by Smith of Chichester & a copy of mine after Liverseege all of which I would lend to the Crystal Palace if you would like to have them'. He can deliver these to Bond St on collecting the other. 'I have safely deposited the Bull at Manchester where it looks magnificent & as it is surrounded by merchant Princes I should be glad that it leave not the County'. The 'Catalogue of the Art treasures of the United Kingdom, collected at Manchester in 1857' lists as number 196, loand by 'G. R. Ward, Esq.': 'JAMES WARD R.A. | BULL, COW. AND CALF. Painted 1822. Exhibited 1823'.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. First Edition. 17 x 10.5cm. Undated [c.1862]. A set of 12 colour chromolithographs designed by W.H. Prior [i.e. William Henry Prior] with a 16pp booklet of text describing each scene, including The Pompeian Court designed by Matthew Digby Wyatt, The Grand Orchestra in the Central Transept, The Egyptian Court, The Byzantine Court, etc. The 12 cards are in a limp illustrated wrap with list of other publications in T. Nelson and Sons' English Views series, also containing the accompanying booklet. Some wear to the booklet spine, otherwise good condition. Very rare.

12mo, 2 pp. On grey paper. Twenty lines. Text clear and complete. Aged, and with chipping to extremities and traces of mount on reverse. He is 'so cruelly busy just now with the investigations into the frauds lately perpetrated on the compy and with the anxieties & worries consequent thereon' that he can only forward 'the testimonial rewritten to the present date'. All the gentlemen he names - 'Paxton Laing &c are out of town just now'. Concludes: 'My support is a very poor one, but I can really do no more just now.' On 1 November 1856 William Robson was found guity of frauds on the Crystal Palace Company amounting to around £28,000, and transported for twenty years.

2pp., 16mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The year has been added in another hand in pencil. Reads: 'Most grateful to you dear Mrs Bartholomew for all your kind care & thought. I have yet to go finally through the sheets and correct all it [sic] stopping &c. so that your corrections will be of great use I am just off to America for a good long holiday. | Good bye | Yours very truly | & obliged | G. Grove'.

See the two men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Dear Mr Paxton' and signed 'Morpeth'. Much of the letter comprises a twenty-three line quotation from a letter Morpeth has received 'from a great friend of mine in Dublin, Mr Hamilton' (After the transcription of Hamilton's letter Morpeth gives his name as 'William Tighe Hamilton Esqre [1807-1886] / Donnybrook / Dublin'. In his letter to Morpeth Hamilton boasts that he is 'a great collector of green-house and stone plants; I have now the largest Houses devoted to flowers in this country except at the Botanic Gardens'. He asks Morpeth if he could put in a word with Paxton regarding the the 'overflowings', 'chips and parings' of 'The Duke [of Devonshire]'s collection of Orchidaceous plants': 'It is only thus that humble people like myself can collect such plants, and perhaps I might be admitted to a share of the crumbs.' He ventures to ask this 'because I am a gardener, and gardeners are licensed beggars'. Morpeth would be pleased if Paxton could oblige Hamilton, but does not mean to 'ask any-thing that is indiscreet'. He ends: 'We have very variable weather here.'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, | Having a day to spare, and having a little business in London, I left home by midnight mail yesterday, but unfortunately got into the smash that took place on the North Western line [i.e. a railway accident at Leighton Buzzard, 5 September 1848], which detained us four hours[.] My principal business was to see you about the Daily News; I have written to Sir Joshua to say no more time can be given to the liberal party, we must either, stop at once, sell at once, or bring in new captial at once'. He expresses the hope that Smith will 'not lose any time in bringing this matter to a satisfactory settlement', and protests 'against a farthing being spent, or a liability being incurred, beyond our present subscribed captial'. He is sending Smith 'a copy of a letter I have written to Sir Joshua Walmsley [sic] on the subject'.

8" x 4", early issue (Godden type B2) with title printed on mount; a nice copy, mounted and framed Godden 9 (eleven-title label); Sprake STG 131; see Godden, Stevengraphs and other Victorian silk pictures, p.15, 124 Silk worked pictures known as Stevengraphs (named after their originator, the Coventry manufacturer, Thomas Stevens, d. 1888) were first introduced to the public as a gimmick at the York Exhibition, 7th May, 1879. These charming silk-woven mementoes proved popular, and new designs were rapidly produced. The present example shows a landscape exterior view of the Crystal Palace. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, this huge iron goliath with over a million feet of glass, was originally errected in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was later moved to Sydenham, where it served for many years as a popular exhibition hall, with fine ornamental gardens. It was destroyed by fire in 1936.
