He worked during the years just after Paracelsus and the rise of iatrochemistry, and is sometimes considered to be "the founder of pneumatic chemistry". Van Helmont is remembered today largely for his 5-year willow tree experiment, his introduction of the word "gas" (from the Greek word chaos) into the vocabulary of science, and his ideas on spontaneous generation. Van Helmont's theories on the nature of life, biological time, physiology and disease, the structure of matter, and the processes of chemical change are veiled in his writings by a brand of Renaissance mysticism. His organic conception of the natural world, together with his belief in alchemy and astral forces, has resulted in a predominantly unsympathetic attitude among historians of science, by whom he is generally regarded as purveying an unpalatable and inherently 'un-scientific' amalgam of medicine and philosophy. Dr Pagel now demonstrates that by painstaking analysis it is possible to appreciate the creative insights of a figure like Van Helmont. "Vorliegende Abhandlung ist entstanden aus der öffentlichen Probevorlesung, die ich zur Erlangung der Lehrberechtigung für pathologische Anatomie und Geschichte der Medizin an der Universität Heidelberg am 31. Oktober 1930 gehalten habe. Zur Bearbeitung des Themas hat mich mein lieber Lehrer, Herr Professor Alex. Schmincke angeregt, dem ich auch dafür herzlich zu danken habe. Das Studium der Quellen führte zur Freilegung geistiger Verbindungen von Virchow und der romantischen Medizin im allgemein - biologischen Ansatz. So sehr eine geschichtliche Sinnbetrachtung der scheinbar divergenten medizinischen Epochen des 19. Jahrhunderts solche Parallelen erwarten ließ, so überraschend waren sie doch in der Fülle und dem Beziehungsreichtum, mit dem sie sich darboten. Nichts weniger als etwa romantische Entgleisungen eines exakten Forschers, werfen sie ein besonderes Licht auf die geschichtliche Sendung Virchows: die Legitimierung des philosophischen Einheitsgedankens vor dem Forum seines naturwissenschaftlichen Zeitalters. Aber auch die Lebens- und Krankheitslehre des jungen Virchow vor Ausbau des Einheitsgedankens der Zellularpathologie ist in manchem Punkte durch die naturphilosophische und naturhistorische Schule vorbereitet. Pagel beschäftigte sich vor allem mit Forschung zur Tuberkulose, der er sich zuwandte, als er selbst daran erkrankte und an dem Spezialkrankenhaus für Tuberkulose Sommerfeld im Havelland war, dessen Chefarzt Helmuth Ulrici ihm während der Genesung experimentelle Arbeiten im Krankenhaus erlaubte.
