The thorough treatment and careful thought applied to European political history are a testimony to the education of a figure who became one of the great political actors of his day. These notes are from the third year of Eugenio Pacelli's study at the Liceo classico Ennio Quirino Visconti in Rome, when he would have been 18 years old, placing them to 1893-94, and offer a rare glimpse into the education of a future leader of the Catholic Church. - The period covered begins in mid-16th century, with Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (1542-87), and proceeds in detail through European political history until the early 19th century, with the final pages discussing the Carbonari, the revolutionary secret society dedicated to Italian liberation and unification. The last date entered is 1821, and the final volume has several blank pages afterwards. Names and titles of important figures and countries are underlined in red, and in some places extra leaves are added, showing that these notes were used as an active study aid by the young Pacelli. We also see him trying to get his head around complex issues: in vol. 21, there is a loose leaf in which he copies out in order all the relevant dates to the partitions of Poland. - Pacelli was appointed Papal Nuncio to Bavaria in 1917, in which context he first met Pascalina Lehnert, his lifelong secretary and housekeeper, to whom he entrusted these volumes. He remained as Nuncio in Germany until 1929, when he was recalled to Rome to be Cardinal Secretary of State, in which context he was instrumental in the same year's Lateran Treaties with Italy and the Reichskonkordat of 1933 with Germany. Elected Pope Pius XII in 1939, he led the Vatican through World War II and the Cold War until his death in 1958. These notebooks from his time as a pupil offer unique insight into the formation of the historical consciousness of a man who himself became a major actor in the political history of the twentieth century. - Underlinings in red and blue, occasional crossings-out, smudges and stains, light edgewear, occasional light foxing. In these study notes, the future Pope Pius XII engages with the period between the Christianisation of the Roman Empire under Constantine through to the 15th century. Particular attention is given to the conflicts between popes and emperors, providing a background to the tension between temporal and spiritual power which was to define his later career as leading figure in the Vatican before, during and after World War II. - These notes are from the first and second years of Eugenio Pacelli's study at the Liceo classico Ennio Quirino Visconti in Rome, when he would have been about 16 to 17 years old, placing them to c. 1891-93, and offer a rare glimpse into the education of the future leader of the Catholic Church. On the cover of vol. IV is a hand-drawn portrait in pen, seemingly a self-portrait by Pacelli, featuring his distinctive nose; vol.
