Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original - Penguin Cat. No. 2490. An anthology of Latin American authors, including an early publication of a short story (The Day after Saturday) by Gabriel García Márquez, predating his first published novel in English (One Hundred Years of Solitude) by three years. ***Very good in colour-illustrated card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are actually remarkably clean. There is some light rubbing to the edges, but no serious creases or tears. The spine has a light vertical reading crease but is square and tight. The covers, including the spine, show some browning and fading (please see scans). Internally also very good with a previous owner's name in red biro on the half-title page, but no other inscriptions or annotations. No tears or creases. Internally the pages are clean, although the paper has tanned over the decades. ***267 pages including a section of Biographical Notes on Authors, plus two pages of other titles, at the back of the book. 198mm x 130mm. ***'The unity of Latin America is only one of name. "Latin American Writing Today", with its translations of recent prose and poetry in Spanish and Portuguese, is evidence of the social and literary differences between the countries it covers - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.' (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original in 1967. Uncommon anthology of Latin American authors - some more well-known to UK readers than others. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. John Sewell (Cover design) (illustrator).

Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Volume 3. No.12 November-December 1947. First impression of the true first edition of the twelfth issue in the original series of this historic poetry magazine edited by Tambimuttu. Front cover colour illustration of the Lyre-bird by Henry Moore. ***Very good in the original dark blue printed and monochrome illustrated stapled covers. The covers are quite clean - just slightly marked and creased, commensurate with age and handling, but please note that there is a bump to the bottom outer corner which affects all pages (please see scans). The staples are rusted, as is often the case with these magazines. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean with hardly any of the usual foxing. No tears. ***40 pages (plus adverts on the inside covers). 248mm x 185mm. ***Contents: Keith Douglas: Words, Song, The Knife, Leukothea; Kathleen Raine: Seen in a Glass; George Barker: To W. S. Graham; Pablo Neruda: Celery, Barcarolle; Iain Fletcher: Twin Poems on the Single Theme (T.T), Metro-Delphic Inc.; Norman Nicholson: Song at Night; Ronald Bottrall: Proserpine at Enna, Perambulation; Rainer Maria Rilke: The Sixth Elegy, The Seventh Elegy, The Eighth Elegy, the Ninth Elegy, The Tenth Elegy; Bernard Spencer: Regent's Park Terrace; Eithne Willkins: Portrait, Eurydike; Philip O'Connor: A Disturbed Environment. ***Points of View: Three Exiles by Hugh Gordon Porteus, Going West by Nicholas Moore; A Polarity by John Heath-Stubbs; Tout Aux Tavernes et Aux Filles by Richard March. ***Vol. 3. No. 12 - the twelfth issue of the original first series of this renowned poetry magazine, edited by Tambimuttu, published in the early post-war period. Of interest to collectors of poetry first editions, and the publications of Poetry London. ***Starting with this edition, due to post-war economic conditions, the publication was reduced back down to 40 pages, from the expanded format of 64 and 72 pages that issues 7 to 11 had enjoyed. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Henry Moore (Front Cover) (illustrator).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. ARTE DE PAJAROS PABLO NERUDA SANTIAGO DE CHILE 1966 17 TIPPED-IN COLOR PLATES SLIPCASE. I am pleased to be able to offer: Arte de Pajaros by Pablo Neruda. This very large portfolio (13 ½ x 15 ½ inches, 106 pages) was published by the Sociedad de Amigos del Arte Contemporaneo in Santiago de Chile dated 1966. It is bound in cream white paper boards (now a bit darkened and contained in a similarly made slipcase). The portfolio includes 17 full-color, tipped-in plates (laminas), blank on the reverse by four other Chilean artists. Apparently, and there is some confusion on this point, this particular version of the book was originally published in a limited edition of 200 copies, some bound in leather and all numbered and signed by Pablo Neruda. This copy is neither numbered or signed but other dealers speculate that there were some extra copies printed. The book is all in Spanish. Condition: This book is in very good condition. I cannot say the same for the slipcase which is soiled and darkened but still intact and capable of doing its job. The portfolio of plates and poems is much better with the only minor issue being some darkening to the covers, front and rear. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright and the colors of the plates, vivid and attractive. There are a few small specks of soiling on the inside edges of the book but nothing serious. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A complete run of one of the most important counter-culture reviews in American literary history. The reputation of the Evergreen Review grows ever more golden as time passes. Celebrated for its design, radical political content, and literary, intellectual excellence. First four issues signed by the editor and various contributors: issue no. 1 signed by Barney Rosset; no. 2, which introducted the Beat Movement to the nation while Howl was still in the midst of its obscenity trial, is signed by Rosset plus Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and Allen Ginsberg; no. 3 is signed by both Rosset and Gary Snyder; no. 4 signed by Rosset and Robin Blaser. A remarkable Beat and American counter-culture high spot which rarely hits the market as a complete set, rarer still in this condition, and unheard of signed by Rosset and the key contributors. All numbered volumes very good or better; the Last Tango in Paris supplement is in good condition. Signed by Author(s).

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 Vols. set : Vol.1 'Authors Take Sides on the Spanish War'. The sole UK printing published by Left Review, London in 1937. The pamphlet BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original printed yellow and red card covers. Internally the 32 pages are staple bound and the binding remains tight. Just the merest hint of light rusting to the staples internally. Light spotting throughout due the quality of the paper stock used, a little heavier in places. Free from inscriptions and erasures. There is some professional transparent reinforcement tape to the front and rear inner hinges where the covers have become detached from the spine, but this is barely discernable. Some light edge wear to the spine ends of the thin card printed covers which are mildly toned in places but are remarkably clean for their age. A scarce survivor of what was a cheap production. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. A very scarce pamphlet containing contributions from 148 British and Irish authors on their personal stance on the Spanish Civil War. The question posed is: 'Are you for, or against, the legal Government and the People of Republican Spain? Are you for, or against, Franco and Fascism?' and is signed off by Aragon, W. H. Auden, Jean Richard Bloch, Nancy Cunard, Brian Howard, Heinrich Mann, Ivor Montagu, Pablo Neruda, Ramon Sender, Stephen Spender, and Tristan Tzara. The publisher states its limitations within a six penny pamphlet, i.e. that it has indeed selected the responses, likely based on its own motivation (though it does say the responses herein are representative) but more so from the weight of the authors themselves. Indeed, it contains most of the powerhouse names of British and Irish literature; W. H. Auden, Samuel Beckett (who perhaps satirically simply writes UPTHEREPUBLIC! , Cyril Connolly, Alastair Crowley (with his name misspelt) , C. Day Lewis, Liam O Flaherty, Ford Madox Ford, David Garnett, Victor Gollancz, Aldous Huxley, Storm Jameson, John Lehmann, Sylvia Pankhurst, Herbert Read, Stephen Spender, Olaf Stapledon, Leonard Woolf and many others. T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Vera Brittain, H. G. Wells, and Vita Sackville-West among others declare themselves neutral, the latter questioning the publication s terminology in the question regarding a legal government. And against the government appears Arthur Machen, Edmund Blunden, Evelyn Waugh and others. An extremely scarce pamphlet, a rare survivor in all senses, which gave audiences direct insights into ideas and worlds some authors seldom expressed themselves in and a hugely important booklet. This extremely scarce pamphlet is one of an edition of three thousand copies which sold out immediately on publication. JSIC reports 13 holdings at institutions. Vol.2 : Writers Take Sides On The Question : Are you for, or are you against Franco and Fascism? Letters about the War in Spain from 418 American Authors . The sole USA printing published by the League of American Writers, New York in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Stapled, blue wraps with writers' names in white and titles in black. Some very light edge-wear. A sharp copy which is housed in a custom solander box with silk ties and marbled inserts. The 418 authors responses include those from : Franklin P. Adams, Sherwood Anderson, Maxwell Anderson, Gertrude Atherton, Brooks Atkinson, Earl Browder, Kenneth Burke, Countee Cullen, William Faulkner, Edna Ferber, Felix Frankfurter, Dashiell Hammett, Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Rockwell Kent, Stanley Kunitz, Katharine Ann Porter, George Seldes, Upton Sinclair, John Steinbeck, I. F. Stone, Genevieve Taggard, Clara Weatherwax ,Richard Wright, Felix Frankfurter, James Weldon Johnson, Rockwell Kent, Stanley Kunitz, I. F. Stone, Genevieve Taggard, Clara Weatherwax, et al. A Very collectible and important two volume set. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

First Edition. 6 volumes. Octavo. 21cm (volume 6 is slightly taller, with a wider margin at the base of the cover). bound in original publisher's buff card wraps illustrated with an abstract design by Jorge Ballester, the same illustration is utilised on all 6 covers, with variations in color and composition. Ballester would have been 19 or 20 at the time of publication, shortly before he went on to form 'Equipo Realidad' with Joan Cardells. 12-14pp per issue. Some sunning or fading to extremities, light edgewear, a very good, clean and attractive collection. An ephemeral bit of book production, utilising thin, rough grain paper, cheap card, and some erratic trimming. Internally clean, some pages unopened. Issues present include: #2 Miguel Hernandez: "Recoged Esta Voz" #3 Nicolas Guillén: "Buenos Dias, Fidel" #4 Pablo Neruda: "No Tenian Mas Armas Que La Aurora." #5 Miguel Angel Asturias: "Bolivar" #6 Paul Eluard: "Libertad" #7 Patricio Lumumba: "Africa Será Libre" Absent from this assemblage is issue #1 "Dos Poemas" by Carlos Pellicer. The title "Ediciones Quinto Regimiento" is a loaded reference to the Madrid based publishing office of the fabled 5th Regiment, a communist brigade fighting for the Republic during the Spanish Civil War to legendary effect, and is clearly intended as both homage and statement of intent. The institutional footprint for this publication is tiny, with a couple of issues having a slight presence on OCLC, and an absence of significant holdings.
