Exlibris Belastingmuseum. - Politiek-historisch werk waarin de patriot Gerrit Paape (1752-1803) een uitvoerige reconstructie geeft van de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse patriottenbeweging vanaf haar ontstaan tot de consolidatie van de Bataafse Republiek. Hij behandelt de opkomst van de patriottenbeweging in de jaren 1780 uit onvrede over het bestuur van de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden, de positie van stadhouder Willem V en de beperkte politieke invloed van de burgerij, de strijd tegen het stadhouderlijke regime van Willem V. Na de mislukking van de Patriottentijd door de Pruisische inval van 1787 weken veel patriotten uit naar Frankrijk. De Franse revolutionaire legers maakten in 1795 hun terugkeer mogelijk, waarna de Bataafse Republiek werd uitgeroepen. Het werk is sterk beïnvloed door de idealen van de Verlichting: vrijheid, volkssoevereiniteit, burgerdeugd en politieke hervorming. Condition : very good copy.
