Hardcover. Zustand: New. The renowned seismologists C.P. Rajendran and Kusala Rajendran offer a riveting story of the Indian earthquakes, their science, history and impact. Like all other natural phenomena, earthquakes are part of life-sustaining forces-- the creators of the mountains, valleys and springs or even deserts on Earth-- a theatre where the show never ends. The book takes the readers to some exciting parts of India to show how earthquakes change the topography where a sea existed not far in the past-- now a salt marsh, affecting the social life, trade and livelihood. The book discusses the likelihood of the next big earthquake in the Himalayas against the backdrop of the devastating earlier ones revealed by archaeology, history and geology. It probes the causes and aftermath of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and gives a glimpse of the past. The high-impact earthquakes will happen, but they need not always end up as human catastrophes. The authors have spent much of their professional lives studying the earthquakes in India and abroad. They tell us from their vast experience how to negotiate the impacts of earthquakes and related hazards by following science-based strategies.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Unique physiographical region on the south-West coast of India forms Keralam which is bounded on the west by the Arabian Sea and the east in fortified by the Western Ghats. Keralam, somehow, was never in the vision of north Indian Archaeologists and above all Historians in Keralam felt more comfort to go along with certain unfounded legends or hypothesis. Thus the human history of the region remained shrouded in mystery. The Prehistoric studies in Keralam have unraveled the cultural continuity in the region beginning from Lower paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Megalithic and early Historic, etc. The articles included in the next comprise Stone age studies, Brahmi Letters, Megalithic finds, ancient coins, ceramics and other artefacts, Human fossil studies and Palaeo geomorphological interpretations.

Seed masting and community dynamics of terrestrial vertebrates. 6. Rodent response to bamboo flowering and seed masting. 7. Ecological disturbances and rodent borne diseases. 8. Socio economic impact of gregarious flowering of bamboo in Northeast India. References. Author index. Subject index. From the Preface Bamboo is crucial to the economy and livelihood of people in several parts of the world especially China Japan Thailand Philippines and North east India. Any large disruption in bamboo yield due to either natural causes as in gregarious flowering followed by seed masting and mass death or manmade such as fire drastically affects the lives of people depending on bamboo. The phenomenon of gregarious of flowering is an extremely enthralling ecological event and at the same time bewildering as its evolutionary role is not understood completely till to day. This book is an attempt to explain the different theories put forward by specialists on some of the aspects of gregarious flowering of bamboos and community response to it especially those of vertebrates (birds and rodents). It is the first ever attempt of consolidating plant ecology and animal response both of which affect drastically the livelihood of people depending on bamboo. This book is a synthesis of many established facts theories and hypotheses of plant and animal ecology with which lives of bamboo dependent human population is intricately interwoven. 160 pp.

From the Preface: "Unlike a flora a revision provides more reliable information on various aspects particularly identity since typification of names is involved and overall distribution of a taxon in the whole country. The latter particularly on endemics is more desirable in the present scenario of fast-vanishing forests, depleting populations, disturbed habitats and disappearing species to adopt conservation measures. Such information is also needed to sensitise the conservation community at different levels which at times is believed to be fiddling while Rome burns. Hence, many workers continue to emphasize the overriding importance of revisions since enormous material has been added in Indian herbaria in the recent past. A taxonomic revision of a family with over one hundred species, however, can be a very daunting proposition in that there can be umpteen hurdles in getting types and other authentic specimens and old literature particularly that appeared in ephemeral periodicals more than two centuries ago from European herbaria. 431 pp.

The Forests are playing a significant role in the economic prosperity and ecological stability of the country. The Indian Forests faces severe biotic and abiotic pressure leads to shrinking of its geographical distribution and the forest based industries are at the cross roads. The rate of deforestation at an alarming rate of 1.5 million ha year-1 and has fortunately come down rapidly with the enactment of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Currently, the forest area in the country is around 23.81 per cent and in Tamil Nadu, it is around 18.16 per cent which is much low against the mandated requirement of 33.0 per cent. Not only is the forest wealth of the country very poor but also its productivity in terms of Mean Annual Increment (MAI) is also one of the lowest. The less forest area coupled with the low productivity of Indian forest has ushered in a total mismatch between the demand and supply of both domestic and industrial wood requirement. The scientific team of industrial agroforestry consortia of Forest College and Research Institute has brought out a book on "Industrial Agroforestry: Perspectives and Prospectives" to address the needs of stake holders at all levels of Production to Consumption System. This book incorporated the India's Forest and Agroforestry situation and the need for industrial wood plantations. It also comprises the status of various wood based industries like pulp and paper, plywood, matchwood, dendro power, biofuel and the requirement for different raw materials and the associated supply chain management. The incorporation of Tree Improvement, Clonal Forestry, Precision Silviculture, Profitable Agroforestry Models, Supply and Value Chain Management and Price Forecasting are some of the needed information addressed in this book which would be very useful to all wood based industrial persons, academicians and researchers of SAUs, ICAR, ICFRE Institutes, graduating students, practicing foresters, professional foresters and forest entrepreneurs.
