A very scarce work. Illustrated with a vignette title page, and eleven plates. Collated, bound…without ten plates. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. A collection of the paintings of Richard Parkes Bonington, drawn onto stone by James Duffield Harding. Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic landscape painter, known for bringing aspects of English style into French art when he moved there when he was fourteen. He died young and subsequently became one of the most influential British artists of his time. His style was inspired by the old masters, butt was modern in his application. Bonginton's landscapes were mostly of coastal scenes, noted for their low horizon and large sky, with a brilliant use of light and atmosphere. This work contains his most popular and influential scenes, as well as his cityscapes and portrait works. Drawn onto stone by James Duffield Harding, who was also an English landscape painter, as well as being a lithographer. He used tinted papers and opaque paints in watercolour, which proved to be influential. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally sound, with rubbing to the leather. Marks and discolouration to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spotting. Good. R. P. Bonington; J. D. Harding (illustrator). book.
