In den WarenkorbFirst edition, scarce, with a fine provenance: bookplate of Flora Horlick (1888-1955), daughter of Colonel Cunliffe Martin (1834-1917), Indian Army, who served in the Body Guard and whose short biography and service history is included at page 254. Martin had a distinguished career, serving in the Santhal and Indian rebellions (…severely wounded and mentioned in despatches). On the conclusion of the latter conflict he left the Body Guard and rejoined his old regiment. He was on the march to Magdala and commanded the Central India Horse during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. His father had also served in the Body Guard, as medical officer. "Described as an 'unofficial history' from its formation in 1773 to the end of 1908, this is a detailed work which certainly ranks as a formal history The Body Guard took part in many actions, and these are described in some detail The glossary and bibliography are very good, with many items not often mentioned elsewhere" (Perkins). Perkins p. 397. Quarto. Original red cloth neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, gilt-lettered front cover with regimental badge gilt, top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded colour frontispiece and 4 colour plates (3 of uniforms), 13 half-tone plates, and 2 part-coloured, full-page maps. Spine sunned and sometime lightly washed, superficial crack running from foot to mid-way, slight bump to front lower corner, internally clean. A good copy.
