The volumes of the Project on the History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognize the difference between the areas of material civilizations and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called methodological pluralism. In spite of its primarily historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. The current accounts of the history of civilization do not generally appear to give adequate importance to non western civilizations. Works like Needham's Science and Civilization in China are rare. The accounts of Indic civilization on the other hand have either neglected the factor of civilizational contacts or represented them in an inadequate manner. Few serious attempts have been made to gain an insight into human civilization in all its aspects through the comparative historical and integrated studies. Historical research necessarily tied to the study of the source material is still in the process of rising to the level of universal history. Volume, I, The Dawn and Development of Indian Civilization comprises six parts. Parts 4 and 5 are intended to review the history of science, philosophy and culture in Indian civilization in the context of civilizational contacts with the Iranic, Semitic and Hellenic worlds and comparable developments in them. A perusal of literature indicate that earlier explorers paid little attention to the lower pteridophytes of Uttarakhand. Therefore, the present work was carried out with a view to prepare taxonomic account of the known fern allies of Uttarakhand. In all 23 species of fern allies have so far been reported from Uttarakhand based on the information collected and collected. Though the number of species is not very high but there is great abundance of individuals in majority of species with wide distribution in various forests. The present treatment is based on the extensive collections made by the authors from the state. Plants are arranged in alphabetical order under each genus. In the taxonomic treatment , the arrangement of families of fern-allies follows mainly Pich-Sermolli 1977. Each entry gives the information on key to the families, genus and species, current nomenclature, synonyms, habitat, critical comment wherever known, distributional data etc. Coloured microphotoplates and line drawings are also provided for some species to making the identification easy. Routine herbarium practices (Jain and Rao 1977) have been followed in the collection of plant material and for preserving the herbarium specimens. All the specimens were critically examined and identified with the help of floras monographs and revisionary papers and were later determined in the herbaria (PAN PUN BSD BSA DD CAL LWG K BM etc.) with the help of eminent pteridologist working there. In presenting the flora the families are arranged according to Pichi Sermolli (1977) system with minor modification (Ching 1978 Kramer and Green 1990). Kyes for families genera and species are also included alongwith the detailed description of these. Citation of species is kept minimum. Illustration for maximum plants and also the photographs been provided. The description is followed by specimens examined ecology earlier records from the study area and distribution of the species critical foot notes and taxonomic notes area also provided wherever needed. An extensive study in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts leads to the conclusions that 256 species of ferns under 75 genera belonging to 36 families are present over here. Phytogeography of 256 species 11 varieties 1 hybrid 1 forma and 2 subspecies occurring in the study area are compared to Nepal Pakistan and different published regional floras of India. The description of fern habitats depicting ecology population size altitude is provided in detail. Ethnobotanical notes on various fern species from the study area are also presented. It is hoped that the present volume covering various aspect of the fern flora of Chamoli and Rudraprayag will be of immense use to students researchers teachers forest personnel horticulturists nature enthusiasts and other scientists engaged in the documentation of the biological diversity of India. 673 pp.
